Our short break in Edinburgh was over far too quickly! We returned south again on the ECML leaving Edinburgh at lunchtime enjoying another smooth and efficient journey in a Mk. IV coach. They really are superb coaches and with plans for their replacements now in the planning phase I hope that these will be as good as what they are replacing; I suspect not!

Class 221, XC 09.00 Glasgow Central-Penzance, Abbeyhill district of Edinburgh from Calton Hill
Taken from the lofty heights of Calton Hill that towers above the eastern end of Edinburgh an unidentified CrossCountry 221 leaves the city working the 09.00 Glasgow Central to Penzance service. Looking across the Abbeyhill district of Edinburgh reveals the large Meadowbank Stadium that hosted the Commonwealth Games in both 1970 and 1986. It is also the home to Edinburgh City FC.

Edinburgh Waverley station from Calton Hill
This view of Waverley station shows its incredible location deep in a valley between the medieval Old Town and the eighteenth-century New Town most famous for Princes Street. This view clearly shows the new and vast glazing to the roof that has improved the interior ambience of the station. Its central location is a real boon to the millions of tourists who visit the city every year meaning easy access to their accommodation after arrival in the city. Notice also the snow covering the Pentland Hills in the distance, a reminder of how cold it was over this early Easter period.

380105, SR 13.43 Edinburgh Waverley-North Berwick, Edinburgh Waverley station
Following a shakey start with various issues delaying their introduction into service the Class 380s are now a regular fixture around Edinburgh. Basking in the sunshine under Waverley's vast and recently re-glazed roof 380105 will soon depart with the 13.43 service to North Berwick.

67021 & 90028, stabled, Edinburgh Waverley station
A couple of EWS beauties basking in the spring sunshine at the eastern end of Edinburgh Waverley station! I am open to correction on this but I think that 67021 to the left was acting as a Thunderbird ready to rescue any trains that got into trouble on the double-track ECML south of Edinburgh. 90028 will have worked the previous night's down Caledonian Sleeper service from Euston. Tonight it will return south again with the up Highland service once the three portions arrive from Fort William, Inverness and Aberdeen, hopefully, all relatively on time avoiding onward delays!

334032, 13.48 Edinburgh Waverley-Helensburgh Central & 91124, GR, 09.30 London King's Cross-Edinburgh Waverley, Edinburgh Waverley station
Two trains display two defunct liveries at Edinburgh Waverley station! To the left 334032 will work the 13.48 service to Helensburgh Central still wearing its Strathclyde Partnership for Transport livery that is in the process of being replaced by a much more modern and up-to-date SctoRail Soltare paint scheme. To the right, 91124 arrives in the Scottish capital with the 09.30 from King's Cross. This locomotive is branded 'East Coast' but still wears its GNER paint which it has done so since 1997.

158734, SR 14.00 Edinburgh Waverley-Glasgow Queen Street, Edinburgh Waverley station
The new glazing installed in the roof of Edinburgh Waverley station has transformed the interior, particularly noticeable on bright days such as this with the quality of light being particularly intense. ScotRail's 158734 waits in one of the western-facing bay platforms with the 14.00 service to Glasgow Queen Street.

37423, NMR train, Peterborough North
On arrival back at Peterborough from Edinburgh, I left my wife and son at the station to go and collect the car from where I had parked it on Woodfield Road. On crossing the ECML to the north of the station the NMT was sitting under the bridge with 37423 'Spirit of The Lakes' leading the three yellow Mk. II coaches. Dominating the background is Peterborough PSB which opened in December 1972 wiping away several manual boxes in the process. However at now over forty years of operation time has been called with it due to be replaced by a huge regional signalling centre at York sometime in the next few years that is if Network Rail keeps up with its own schedule of works; something it is not very good at!

Tickets, Peterborough-Edinburgh-Peterborough
Our tickets for the return trip from Peterborough to Edinburgh. Advance fares using our family railcard were surprisingly cheap for the three of us with split ticketing no cheaper. It just goes to show that with a little advanced planning and preparation competitive rail fares are out there despite what the soothsayers might say!
