'The Capital Deltic Reprise' was supposed to be the second railtour operated by the DPS' 55009 'Alycidon' but with industrial action causing the postponement of 'The Coronation Deltic' back in May it ended up being the first mainline charter for the overhauled Deltic. With industrial action also taking place on this day it was questionable if it too would run but in the event it did if heavily delayed on the outward trip. I headed from home to Tallington as I wanted to capture it on its old hunting grounds and running at full line speed.

800202 & 800210, GR 10.05 London King's Cross-Leeds (1D09, RT), Tallington
For a strike day, I was surprised at the number of service trains running whilst I was at Tallington crossing waiting for a far more interesting train. One such strike-breaking service was the 1D09 10.05 King's Cross to Leeds service worked by 800202 and 800210. For once I was actually grateful for it being an essentially cloudy morning as this photograph would have been into the sun had it been a clear day. The eastern side of the footbridge at Tallington that was installed when the line was electrified offers much better photographic opportunities.

180107, 08.29 Sunderland-London King's Cross (1A61, 4E), Tallington
180107 'Hart of the North' speeds down Stoke Bank working the 08.29 Sunderland to King's Cross Grand Central service. The train has been descending for fifteen miles since leaving Stoke tunnel on an essentially straight track, this was, of course, the section of line that 'Mallard' reached its record-breaking one hundred and twenty-six miles per hour on in July 1938.

803002, LD 10.25 London King's Cross-Edinburgh Waverley (1S92, 2E), Tallington
Open access operator Lumo's smart blue livery makes a change from seeing LNER Azumas on the ECML where Hull Trains and Grand Central also operate services. 803002 passes Tallington working the 10.25 King's Cross to Edinburgh. Due to various access rights this service only makes two intermediate stops the first at Newcastle nearly three hours into its journey and secondly at Morpeth.

800105, GR 09.45 Leeds-London King's Cross (1A20, 1E), Tallington
I utilised the widest angle from the lens to compose this slightly different image of 800105 working the 09.45 Leeds to King's Cross LNER service passing Tallington. Due to the extremely wide angle, I had to utilise Photoshop's transition's functions to straighten out the curves of the verticals. I wonder if the concrete footbridge that was installed when the line was electrified in 1987 was manufactured at the adjacent Dowmac plant to which rail access is gained via the points and track verging off to the right in this photograph.

800112, GR 10.30 London King's Cross-Edinburgh Waverley (1S12, RT), Tallington
Another extreme wide-angled view of Tallington level crossing shows 800112 passes northbound working the 10.30 King's Cross to Edinburgh 1S12 service. This level crossing is the bain of many people's lives in this area with frequent trains (even on a strike day such as this) necetating the barriers being down for low periods causing long delays on the busy A1175 road with drivers taking a local rat run route via country lanes.

55009, outward leg of The capital Deltic Reprise, 06.57 Willington-London King's Cross (1Z24, 34L), Tallington
This is what Deltics were designed and built to do, namely running at up to one hundred miles per hour on the ECML between Scotland and London, something that they did for twenty years. Having recently been completely refurbished by the Deltic Preservation Society at its Barrow Hill base 55009 'Alycidon' passes Tallington at line speed working The Capital Deltic Reprise charter. At this point the train was running some thirty minutes late having made up the same in deficit being delayed by an hour leaving Burton Ot Wetmore sidings where the service originated. Evidently, the delay was caused by paperwork relating to the stock not being in order necessitating some shunting of the coaches before a departure was authorised.
