Andy and I had intended to head to the eastern extremity of the Day Ranger area at Lincoln but realising that we would then be isolated there for a couple of hours with no returning trains we decided to take this journey to Newark Castle and then immediately retrace our steps. For Andy, this was virgin track so he was pleased to tick this route off!

156498, stabled, Nottingham station
Back in my spotting youth Nottingham station was always an exciting and varied place to visit with a myriad of classes on offer both hauling freight and passenger trains. However, today it has changed massively with only the odd non-passenger train and just units on offer. Traffic is sufficiently light such that units can be stabled on running lines around the station such is the case here with 156498. Apologies for the three hundred-foot tall chimney at Nottingham's Eastcroft incinerator emerging from the roof of the Class 156, very poor composition on my part!

170532, EM 09.08 Crewe-Newark Castle (2N37, 1E), Nottingham station
Andy and I had to revise our journey plans a little earlier in the day due to rail replacement busses (that we did not want to use for obvious reasons) operating between Leicester and Peterborough. On arrival at Nottingham, we took the 09.08 Crewe to Newark Castle train to its destination. I do not think that I have travelled on this route before but Andy and did survey the line some years ago prior to the modernisation of it and the associated removal of the mechanical signalling. 170532 arrives at Nottingham that we travelled on to Newark and then back again.

70813, 10.21 Doncaster CHS-Bescot Yard (12E), Newark Castle station
70013 runs light engine through Newark Castle station as the 10.21 Doncaster to Bescot light engine move. This particular Colas Class 70 looks very tatty, as do most of their locomotives, with their fleet being involved exclusively on freight and infrastructure work.
