Our journey back from Frome to Northampton went without a hitch arriving bang on time. The weather was pretty appalling for most of the journey with strong wind and heavy, driving rain thanks to the leading edge of Storm Bara.

158750, GW 08.50 Weymouth-Gloucester (2V60, 8L) Frome station
In absolutely foul weather 158750 makes a welcome sight as it arrives at a wind-blown and cold Frome station. My wife and I travelled aboard the 2V60 08.50 Weymouth to Gloucester service as far as its destination. These units are a far more comfortable travelling experience than the more common Turbo units cascaded from the Thames Valley a few years ago following the introduction of the Electrostars.

170101, XC 11.45 Cardiff Central-Nottingham (1M64, 2L), Gloucester station
Our second train of the trip back arrives at Gloucester station in a welcome break between some very heavy rain! My wife and I took 170101 working the 11.45 Cardiff to Nottingham service from here as far as New Street. The wifi was excellent and I was able to work on this website as we travelled but I did pause to marvel at the speed that the unit ascended Lickey!

350114, LN 14.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1Y26, RT), Birmingham New Street station
It may not look like it but it was absolutely pouring with rain when I ventured out on to the platform end at Birmingham New Street to take this photograph! Our third and final train home waits to leave New Street with the 14.14 service to Euston that we took as far as Northampton. The journey back was noted for the darkness that descended as we approached home with it being like evening and yet only being 15.00; I suppose that we were only a week or so off the shortest day though!

HS2 site, Birmingham Curzon Street
It has been somewhat remiss of me not to be recording the HS2 developments just after leaving New Street tunnels in Birmingham over the last two years or so. I have vowed to be more regular with my photographs when passing the spot over the coming months and years. With the Curzon Street station building now enclosed in a plastic sarcophagus to protect it from the HS2 works going on all around it! When the construction is completed sometime in 2026 (maybe?) the Grade 1 listed 1832 building will form an integral part of the grand new HS2 terminus being located to the northern side of the new structure.

Tickets, Frome-Northampton
Our tickets for the return journey from Frome to Northampton. We travelled on an identical route with the journey split in exactly the same way. I have to add that the return journey was absolutely faultless with all trains running to time apart from a small delay arriving into Gloucester caused by us having to wait for a late-running Crosscountry Voyager to pass us at Bristol Parkway. Quite why this could not have overtaken us on the now re-quadrupled track from Dr. Day's Junction and up Ashely bank to Filton is a little beyond me as it was right behind us. I thought that it was for situations like this that the route was quadrupled again back in 2018?
