Our day trip to Norwich by train was a glorious day with unbroken sunshine and a brilliant blue sky. Whilst my wife and son undertook some retail therapy, I went off to explore in and around the station area.

170270, LE 09.46 Sheringham-Norwich (2S09), Sheringham station
170270 basks in the morning sunshine at Sheringham's somewhat diminutive station. My wife and I travelled on this, the 09.46 to Norwich, all the way to its destination. Travelling on a Class 170 represents quite an upgrade from the more usual Class 156, something that did not go unnoticed by my wife!

170270, LE 09.46 Sheringham-Norwich (2S09), Cromer station
Two-car 170270 waits at Cromer station whilst the driver walks to the other end of the train to continue its journey to Norwich. My wife and son always get a little anxious when I hop off the train to take a photograph of a train despite my reassurance here at Cromer that I will have at least three minutes!

82139, LE 12.30 London Liverpool Street-Norwich (1P28) & 57011, 15.08 Norwich Crown Point-Stowmarket RHTT (3S01), Thorpe Junction
Unfortunately, the sun is a little low in the autumn sky to illuminate the main subject of the photograph taken from Norwich's Canary Way bridge. DVT 82139 leads the 12.30 from Liverpool Street on its final approach to Norwich about to cross Thorpe Junction. In the background, one of the season's RHTT trains waits on the chord in front of Crown Point depot with DRS' 57011 at the head.

90007 'Sir John Betjeman' pushes the 12.30 Liverpool to Norwich into its destination that is located just behind the bridge where I am standing. The lines off to the left here at Thorpe Junction lead to the coast be it Sheringham, Great Yarmouth or Lowestoft.

158854, EM 14.58 Norwich-Liverpool Lime Street (1R98), Trowse swing bridge
158854 heads away from its starting point working the 1R98 Norwich to Liverpool Limes Street service. It is crossing the single track Trowse swing bridge that spans the River Wensum that permits access to access to the historic port of Norwich that was established by an Act of Parliament in 1827. The signal box inspired structure on the other bank of the river controls the opening and closing of the swing bridge.

90007, LE 15.00 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P47), Trowse swing bridge
90007 'Sir John Betjeman' leads the 15.00 Norwich to Liverpool Street Greater Anglia train across the Trowse swing bridge. This interesting structure was opened in 1987 replacing an earlier swing bridge that could not be updated to accommodate the electrification of the GEML.

158862, EM 09.52 Liverpool LS-Norwich (1L08), Trowse swing bridge
158862 rattles across Trowse swing bridge working the 09.52 Liverpool to Norwich East Midlands Trains train within half a mile of journey's end. In this view, the unusual design of the bridge is clear to see with its fixed overhead conductor rail instead of a wire providing AC power for the electric Greater Anglia trains. This is the only electrified swing bridge in the UK being a particulary rare type of structure with one other in Europe and others in North America.

57002, 15.08 Norwich Crown Point-Stowmarket RHTT (3S01), Trowse swing bridge
Looking characteristically filthy DRSs 57002 leads the 3S01 15.08 Norwich to Stowmarket RHTT over the Trowse swing bridge. The height restricted bridge under the locomotive leads into Norwich's Crown Point depot but at a clearance of two-point eight metres, deliveries and larger vehicles need to enter from the other side of the depot off Thorpe Road.

57011, 15.08 Norwich Crown Point-Stowmarket RHTT (3S01), Trowse swing bridge
The rear of the 3S01 15.08 Norwich to Stowmarket RHTT train rattles and crashes over the Trowse swing bridge. It did not appear that the train was actually in operation but was simply returning to its base at Stowmarket located just south of the station. The fluttering red flags indicated to river users that the bridge is closed to them and that they should stop and wait for it to be swung before they can pass.

57010, unidentified up RHTT, Thorpe Junction
An image that has needed a fair bit of Photoshop treatment! I hate extreme lighting in my photographs, particularly burnt out light areas at the expense of darker ones. With digital photography, it is easier to lighten up under-exposed areas with them often containing a surprising amount of detail in the blackness! So, I tend to expose an image for the sky and other brightly lit areas and then split that area away as a layer enabling me to then deal with the darker area sepparatly. It has worked reasonably well here at Thorpe Junction near Norwich station. It shows 57010 leaving with an unidentified RHTT train that I presume was returning to its base at Stowmarket.

57009, unidentified up RHTT, Thorpe Junction
57009 brings up the rear of a mysterious RHT train at Thorpe Junction immediately southeast of Norwich station. With nothing showing on RTT I presume that the out of service train was heading back to its base at Stowmarket. 57009 was one of the twelve Class 57 converted between 1997 and 1999 for use by Freightliner as a stopgap prior to the introduction of the Class 66s. When in service with the freight operator in their green livery it was named 'Freightliner Venturer'. Prior to its conversion, it was numbered 47079 'George Jackson Churchward' that I enjoyed haulage behind way back in 1977, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/23615805204/having-pulled-into-platform-15-york

90010 brings up the rear of the 13.30 Liverpool Street to Norwich 1P32 service as it arrives at its destination. Whilst the locomotive and the third coach from the rear are in Abellio Greater Anglia's new livery the rest of the rake in view wears its modified ONE china blue livery but rebranded with the new operator's vinyls.

90005, LE 15.30 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P49), Thorpe Junction
90005 'Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson' winds the 15.30 Norwich to Liverpool Street service away from its starting point. It will not pick up much speed at this point as the train has to observe a forty miles per hour speed restriction a short distance away under the bridge I'm standing on as it crosses Wensum swing bridge. With the clocks having gone yesterday by this time in the afternoon the sun is already getting very low in the sky but it does produce a lovely quality of light.

153335, LE 14.57 Lowestoft-Norwich (2J81), Thorpe Junction
Second generation units such as these have been the mainstay of operations throughout Norfolk and Suffolk for many years now. In fact, some have been operating longer than the first generation units that they replaced! There are plans for new units to be built and introduced in the future but this is some way off at the moment so with poor reliability and availability GA will need to continue to supplement their services with some loco. hauled sets hired in from DRS. 155335 arrives at Norwich, taken from Canary Way bridge, with the 14.57 from Lowestoft.

170205, LE 14.12 Cambridge-Norwich (1K74), Thorpe Junction
Wearing its ONE paint scheme (but since modified during the failed National Express franchise period) and now with Greater Anglia branding 170205 arrives at Norwich with the 14.12 from Cambridge. It is the farcical situation that besets the clearly flawed and failing franchising arrangements such as this displayed by one simple unit that must be addressed if OUR railways are to be improved and ultimately brought back into public ownership; rant over!

47810 & 47828, stabled, Norwich Yard
With their work for the day done, DRS' 47828 and 47810 'Peter Bath MBE 1927-2006' rest in Norwich Yard along with the hired in stock used to support services to and from the coast. This has been an ongoing arrangement for some time now as there are simply not enough units to operate the number o trains required. Every year it is announced that this is the end but they keep returning....but for how long now we all wonder?

Another view of 47828 and 47805 'Peter Bath MBE 1927-2006' stabled with their DRS stock in Norwich Yard but also included is 37604 over by the service platform. Over to the right beyond the vast Carrow Road retail park is the ground of Norwich City. Unfortunately for Canaries' supporters, they were relegated at the end of the last season finishing eighteenth in the table. Now with Mark Robson and former player Gary Holt as first team coaches, they have had a reasonable start to their season in the Championship and must be among the favourites to be promoted again?

NB They did get promoted back to Premiership, despite finishing third in the table behind Bournemouth and Watford, courtesy of the play-offs.

90010, LE 16.00 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P51), Norwich station
As the driver of 9001 gets the 16.00 to Liverpool Street away from Norwich he gives his windscreen a wash, despite that the platform staff will have done the same thing during the train's layover after arrival using the buckets and long washing brooms to the left. The light is lovely and soft now as the sun sets at the end of what has been a superb autumn day.

56103, stabled, Norwich Yard
There had been a lot of activity in what can only be described as a virtual quarry in the yard adjacent to Norwich station with bulldozers sorting and piling what appeared to be ballast. Veteran 56103, dating from December 1981 was one of the Doncaster built machines that the best of the once extensive class built but it does look a little plain and sad looking in this plain livery with no branding. Note the floodlights and stands of Norwich City's Carrow Road silhouetted against the sky with the sun now having set.

With its red tail lights still illuminated after its recent arrival from London 90008 'The East Anglian' rests at the rear of the stock at Norwich station. In just less than half an hour it will leave with the 16.30 1P53 back to Liverpool Street.

37604, stabled, Norwich yard
DRSs 37604 sits in the bay service platform adjacent to Norwich station. It has, along with a number of other of DRSs finest been involved in hauling trains around the Greater Anglia network to cover for unavailable units. This long term arrangement has become a interesting feature of Norfolk and Suffolk's railways over the last few years.

47818 & 37604, stabled, Norwich Yard
With the sun having set the light levels are falling but there is a certain autumnal warmth to the photograph here at Norwich. 47818 and 37604 are seen in the yard with their services and operations for the day now done assisting Abellio Greater Anglia with their shortage of units. I hope that the passengers travelling to and from Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth appreciate the luxury of Mk. II air-conditioned stock and the sound from a proper locomotive up the front as much as the enthusiasts do!

158862, EM 16.57 Norwich-Manchester Piccadilly (1R60) & 156412, LE 16.40 Norwich-Great Yarmouth (2P28), Norwich station
Within the hour 158862 will leave Norwich with the 16.57 to manchester Piccadilly. Most of these East Midland Railway services extend to Liverpool but a couple a day terminate and start from Piccadilly. To the right, 156412 will depart slightly earlier with the 2P28 local 'all stations' to Great Yarmouth via Acle.

Concourse & gateline, Norwich station
The concourse at Norwich is just beginning to get a little busier at 16.19 (according to the station clock) with early departing commuters. I remember the concourse before the gateline was constructed and recall it being a much more open and pleasant place to be. I find it such a shame that access to the station has to be through these restrictive structures that do nothing for the aesthetics of the interior of the 1886 building.

170207, LE 16.45 Norwich-Sheringham (2S26), Norwich station
Our train home from Norwich to Sheringham waits to leave running as the 2S26 16.45 departure. With my wife and son already aboard 170207, I nipped to the front of the train to get this photograph just five minutes before departure.

37604, stabled & class 170, LE 16.38 Norwich-Cambridge (2K85), Norwich station
In very low lighting use and exposure of 1/15 of a second 37604 is glimpsed at the far side of Norwich station awaiting its next trip to the seaside possibly tomorrow? meanwhile, an unidentified Class 170 unit is waiting for the guard's whistle to depart with the 16.30 local to Cambridge.

I really like the rather lurid and vaguely psychedelic lighting in this photograph taken behind the buffer stops at Sheringham station! It shows 170207 that my wife, son and I have just arrived on from Norwich. With the guard walking down the length of the train and the tail lights already illuminated, it will soon depart with the returning 17.52 Abellio Greater Anglia service.

Tickets, Sheringham-Norwich-Sheringham
The off-peak family return tickets that we bought on the train are good value at just £12.25 (just over £6 each way) for the three of us. We could not have driven to Norwich and parked up for the day for that price and would not have enjoyed a pleasant train journey into the bargain!
