2. Leg 2, Rugby-Stafford (51mi)

During an hour or so at Rugby awaiting validation of our Day Ranger tickets, we captured plenty of freight. Whilst the station has lost much of its atmosphere over the years it remains a busy location with much to interest the enthusiast. Unfortunately, the orientation of the station makes photography tricky in strong summer sunshine. The journey to Stafford was taken on a rather late-running London Northwestern Class 350 that curtailed our plans onward from Stafford a little. The cause of the delays was put down to signalling issues in the Watford area affecting all services. A travelling team of revenue protection officers were much in evidence on this train catching three travellers in our coach with no valid tickets.

57304, stabled Thunderbird, Rugby station
Back in the earlier days of Virgin Trains, the fabled Thunderbirds were scattered at strategic locations up and down the WCML. Wearing their distinctive red liveries and named after the characters from the 1960s British science fiction television series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson these converted Class 47s were designed, rather than performing spectacular 2060 rescues in space, to recover failed Virgin Pendolinos and Voyagers. Sadly, they have lost their distinctive identities now that the contract is handled by DRS. Formally named 'Gordon Tracy' 57304 is now named 'Pride of Cheshire' and is seen stabled at Rugby station in the early morning sunshine.

66702, 03.10 Felixstowe North-Trafford Park (4M13, 3E), Rugby station
66702 'Blue Lightning' brings the 4M13 03.10 Felixstowe to Trafford Park Freightliner through a very sunny and bright Rugby station. The combination of the intense summer lighting and the orientation of the running lines makes this station a tricky one in which to get decent photographs. This one needed a lot of time spent on it to make it presentable from bringing back the completely burnt-out sky to the deep shadows on the front of the train.

90016 & 90044, 02.50 Felixstowe North-Garston (4M45, 25E), Rugby station
The 02.50 Felixstowe to Garston 4M45 Freightliner caught Andy and completely by surprise at Rugby station hence the terrible composition of this photograph completely obliterationg 90044! 90016 leads the doubled headed service that was running early something that it continued to do so right through to its destination.

66593, 03.00 Felixstowe North-East Midlands Gateway (4M86, 55E), Rugby station
On a very warm early summer morning Andy attempts to take a reasonable photograph of the 4M86 03.00 Felixstowe to East Midlands Gateway in the very tricky lighting. 66593 '3MG Mersey Multimodal Gateway' leads the Freightliner service away from Rugby after a lengthy crew change of some five minutes.

66060, 01.04 Dollands Moor-Ditton (6M13, 15E), Rugby station
A vert tatty looking 66060 passes through Rugby station at some speed with the 6M13 01.04 Dollands Moor to Ditton cargo vans. Despite passing my home location some fifteen miles or so to the south this is a service that I have few photographs of as it passes in the early hours then taking a stopover at Daventry where the consist is remarshalled before continuing north at a far more sociable hour! Notice that 66060 still wears the 'Three Beasts' logo under the cab window but that it has lost its EWS branding the complete opposite of the many of the other remaining DB painted Class 66s.

47830, 08.15 Crewe Basford Hall-Wembley Reception (0Z39, 8E), Rugby station
This is a Class 47 that has refused to die but looking at it very faded British Railway's green paintwork is it under threat again? Built as D1645 it became 47061 under TOPS to be renumbered 47649 early in 1986. Three years later it became 47830 being stopped at Garston in January 2008 for not being OTMR equipped. It was subsequently stored as 'okay' at Crewe where it languished for some seven years. It was named 'Beeching`s Legacy' in a ceremony at the NRM in November 2015. It is seen passing through Rugby southbound as the 0Z39 08.15 Crewe to Wembley light engine move.

90008 & 90012, 06.15 Trafford Park-Felixstowe North (4L97, 3L), Rugby station
The 4L97 06.15 Trafford Park to Felixstowe Freightliner service came to a halt at Rugby station just as Andy and I were about to get our next onward train. It is being led by a pair of the former Greater Anglia Class 90s now demoted from top link passenger work to freight duties. Still wearing its plates 90012 'The East Anglian' is second with 90012 leading. The Class 90s taken on by Freightliner at their Crewe Basford Hall base have completely ousted the veteran Class 86s that are now stored in various conditions. 350252, 08.46 London Euston-Crewe (1U27, 18L), Rugby station
The first journey of our West Midlands Day Ranger was taken on the 08.46 Euston to Crewe service from Rugby to Stafford aboard 350252. Unfortunately, due to signalling issues near Watford, all northbound trains were heavily delayed with ours arriving nearly twenty minutes adrift; not a great start. I have to say that the guard did keep passengers well informed and apologised for the inevitable inconvenience caused! Due to our late arrival at Stafford, my train planning had to be adjusted a little due to us missing our southbound service.

Journey score 4/10
