24. The final MML HSTs; the end of an era-15.05.21

THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2021 > 24. The final MML HSTs; the end of an era-15.05.21

The end of a forty-five year era came on this day with the ending of HST operations leading to and from London. The first commercial HST service commenced on 04.10.76 at the start of the 1976/77 winter timetable with trains running between London and Bristol and South Wales. They ended their days at the end of the 2020/21 winter timetable with the final trains running between London and Leeds on the Midland Main Line. Despite the awful weather more reminiscent of winter than late spring, I went out to capture all four services with Andy joining me in the evening for the final two runs. It was all a bit emotional; very strange considering the disdain that we felt towards these now well-respected trains all those years ago. Interestingly, the first photograph in my collection of an HST was taken almost forty-four years to the day at Bath Spa of set 253015.

 The penultimate up HST working......

In pouring rain the 1B23 06.35 Leeds to St. Pancras climbs Sharbrook bank past Wymington with former Virgin East Coast/LNER power car 43272 leading set NL57 with 43309 bringing up the rear. The driver gave me a cheery wave as he passed and a firm blow on the horn. I was surprised that I was the only enthusiast at this open spot that was close to a number of public footpaths but it did require a fair trek from my parked van donning my GoreTex waterproof and boots!

A grab shot over the gross parapet of the 'new' bridge installed to accommodate the electrification wiring shows 222103 at speed with the 08.05 St. Pancras to Nottingham. Yet another photograph taken in May with cold and wet weather predominating; a feature of spring 20121!

222011 tears down from Sharnbrook summit with the 09.31 St. Pancras to Sheffield service. It is passing near to the Bedfordshire village of Wymington in the pouring rain. This photograph took a little bit of work in Photoshop to bring it round with particular work needing to be aimed at the darker areas and the purple livery of the unit.

A dramatic low angled view of 222006 'The Carbon Cutter' as it climbs towards Sharnbrook summit on the up fast line working the 09.12 Nottingham to St. Pancras service. In the background, the wiring of the recently re-doubled slow lines can be seen. For a short distance, they diverge from the fast lines not climbing quite as high at Shrarnbrook summit but going through the one thousand eight hundred and seventy-yard long tunnel.

Former telegraph pole, Wymington SP946644
The semaphores and mechanical signalling on this section of the Midland Main Line finally came out of use on 05.12.87 with the closure of the boxes within the fabled 'Leicester gap'. No doubt the telegraph poles were felled pretty soon afterwards and was common practice, then and now for that matter, unwanted infrastructure is just left by the side of the tracks for nature to take over. Over thirty years later the remnants of the destruction still lie by the side of the line here at Wymington in the form of telegraph pole bearers.

222016 speeds past Wymington on the Bedfordshire/Northamptonshire border with the 09.00 Sheffield to London St. Pancras EMR service. In the foreground is the remains of a former telegraph pole that would have been unceremoniously felled following the closure of the mechanical signal boxes on 05.12.87.

 The final up HST working......

A profound and significant moment on the railways of the UK sees power car 43274 lead the final ever up HST working! Having worked into Paddington, King's Cross and St. Pancras throughout their working lives the HST has become synonymous with fast, comfortable and reliable rail transportation but the 07.40 Leeds to St. Pancras 1B23 service brings the curtain down. With 43102 'The Journey Shrinker' bringing up the rear the train is seen passing Wymington in Bedfordshire.

 The final up HST working......

43102 'The Journey Shrinker' brings up the rear of the FINAL ever up London HST service on the network. Formed of set NL58 1B28 07.40 Leeds to St. Pancras powers up Sharbrook bank near Wymington to bring the curtain down on yet another era of our railways. I must admit that there was a tear in my eye after it had passed that I put down to the windy and chilly weather!

222012, EM 10.47 London St. Pancras-Corby (1M16, RT), Sharnbrook Road bridge
Until clearance of the vegetation prior to the electrification of the Midland Main Line, this view was all but impossible. Taken from the Shrarnbrook Road bridge near the village of Souldrop EMR's 222012 works the 10.47 St. Pancras to Corby 1M16 service past the spot on its climb towards Sharnbrook summit. From the following Monday and the start of the summer timetable this service, and all other Corby services for that matter, will pass over to the 'refreshed' former Greater Anglia Class 360 Desiros with the Meridians released to cover for the withdrawn HSTs.

The penultimate HST working from London......

Under stormy skies that had just deposited a very heavy bout of rain the last but one ever HST service train to leave London is seen. EMR's 1D63 18.34 St. Pancras to Leeds service passes Oakley just north of Bedford taken from the village's Highfield road bridge. According to postings on the internet, there was a friendly and celebratory atmosphere on-board the train with staff joining in with the many enthusiasts who were travelling on the train no doubt with the normals looking on in a bemused fashion not quite grasping the significance of their particular journey!

In dire lighting, Meridian 222023 climbs towards Shranbrook summit taken near to the village of Souldrop with the 18.47 St. Pancras to Corby Saturday evening service. From the next day, this service would go over to electric haulage with a fleet of 'refreshed' and rebranded Class 360's taking over these services.

360106 & 360108, 18.30 Cricklewood Depot-Kettering Sidings (5Z08, 25L), Sharnbrook Road bridge
Despite now being branded as 'EMR Connect' the former Greater Anglia Class 360s cannot hide their past given that their livery has remained exactly the same. 360106 and 360108 work the 5Z08 18.30 Crickelwood to Kettering stabling sidings empty coaching stock move. The train is seen on the down slow line at Sharnbrook Road near the Bedfordshire village of Souldrop. Notice the brief burst of evening sunshine in the background that was, unfortunately, too low on the sky to illuminate the subject with just a little light getting through the bridge's arch catching the driver's screen.

By 20.30 at this time of year (mid-May) there should be enough light to take half-decent railway photographs if spots are chosen wisely. Unfortunately, on this particular evening, along with many others that characterised the spring of 2021, it was cloudy and wet with just a brief burst of illumination as seen in the background here near Souldrop in Bedfordshire. 222102 descends at speed from Sharbrook summit working the 1C77 17.50 York to St. Pancras EMR service.

The last EVER HST working from London......

The end of a forty-five-year era takes place at Souldrop on the climb of Sharbrook bank as the final ever commercial HST heads north in absolutely awful lighting. 43102 'The Journey Shrinker' leads the 1F70 20.02 St. Pancras to Leeds with EMR celebrity 43274 bringing up the rear. The leading power car in its superb InterCity Swallow livery wears a headboard proclaiming 'LAST HST FROM LONDON' will go into preservation as part of the national collection with the stock, still wearing its Virgin East Coast/LNER paint scheme probably going for scrap sooner than later. I would not normally bother with a photograph in such awful lighting but the enormity of the event meant that it just had to be done!
