39. Harrowden Junction-08.07.14

In another escape from work I headed to Harrowden Junction between Wellingborough and Kettering. I found that the road bridge had been closed with work taking place to renew it in preparation for the forthcoming electrification. Also, the early stages of the new slow line and complete rebuilding of the junction were observed. Unfortunately, the contractors were not keen on me taking photographs with a minor confrontation ensuing with the threat from one of them to call the BTP regarding my presence on a public road in a public place. Needless to say, I carried on taking my photographs and no police attended the scene!

Work in preparation for new bridge construction in connection with MML electrification, The Slips, Harrowden Junction
Contractors have commenced their work at Harrowden Junction in preparation for the electrification of the line. Also, firstly the second relief line will be reinstated extending quadruple running from Sharnbrook Junction all the way through Kettering to Glendon Junction. Just out of frame to the right is the original brick arched bridge much favoured by railway photographers that is to demolished and no doubt replaced by one of Network Rail's favoured concrete monstrosities with huge green parapets! It was one of the contractors undertaking the strimming in this image who took offence to my taking of photographs such that I was rather aggressively challenged about my presence.

Class 222, EM 11.26 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F28), Harowden Junction from The Slips
The 11.26 St. Pancras to Sheffield East Midlands Trains service heads north past Harrowden Junction almost camouflaged by the ripening wheat in the foreground. Unfortunately, I have been unable to identify this particular Meridian despite enlarging the number on the nose cone.

222012, EM 10.49 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C37), Harrowden Junction from The Slips
222012 works the 10.49 Sheffield to St. Pancras service past Harrowden Junction between Kettering and Wellingborough. The photograph is taken from the intriguingly named road, The Slips. This road was closed at the time this photograph was taken due to the old bridge that carried it over the MML being replaced to accommodate the forthcoming electrification wiring.

43089, EM 11.32 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B38), Harowden Junction from The Slips
The 11.32 Nottingham to St. Pancras HST working passes Harrowden Junction from The Slips. EMR power car 43089 leads the train but the rear one remains unidentified. HSTs were introduced on this route in October 1982 with a full timetable from the spring of 1983 and have been in operation ever since. However, now that electrification has been authorised by the government and that work is underway their time on this route (and many others for that matter) is limited. The plan is for full electrification to be in operation by 2020; we'll see!

Class 222, EM 12.16 Corby-London St. Pancras (1P39), Harrowden Junction from The Slips
The 12.16 Corby to St. Pancras Meridian service passes Harrowden Junction between Kettering and Wellingborough. Notice the pair of lone poppies in the foreground that also shows where the contractors undertaking the replacement of The Slips bridge have cleared the edge of the field to allow access to the worksite.

R10 SCR, closed The Slips & Harrowden Junction bridge, in connection with MML electrification
The closure of The Slips, a road that links the A509 at Great Harrowden with the village of Finedon will cause considerable inconvenience as it is a popular local cut through. It is also going to impact on railway photographers as the vantage point afforded by the bridge, seen in the background, is a classic one and will be much missed. It is unlikely that the new bridge that will eventually replace it will allow quite such a range of angles and positions.

R10 SCR, closed The Slips & Harrowden Junction bridge, in connection with MML electrification
The busy cut-through route linking the A509 to Finedon and the A6 thus avoiding Wellingborough closed to road traffic yesterday (06.07.14) in order that the bridge seen in the background can be replaced as a precursor to the electrification of the MML. Note that this work is scheduled to take until just before Christmas and that some wag has written in black marker pen '6 months! You are not building the Forth Bridge' and they may have a point!

Class 222, EM 11.29 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C40) & R10 SCR, closed The Slips & Harrowden Junction bridge, in connection with MML electrification
The bridge seen in the background and indicated on the sign will soon be no more! With the road now closed for some five months during which time the bridge will be replaced no doubt with some modern structure hardly in keeping with the Midland Railway seen here. A Meridian passes the scene working the 11.29 Sheffield to St. Pancras service. It was the contractor seen in the scene undertaking vegetation clearance who took exception to my presence taking photographs stating that he had called the BTP to have me removed; needless to say they did not appear!
