13. Trip to Malton-30.03.21

A smashing early spring day found me heading to Yorkshire with my boss to collect two cars bought blind at auction. Of the two, only one managed the return journey, the other courtesy of the AA after making it just four miles! At least the train journey there from Wellingborough was more reliable. I selected an interesting route via Nottingham, Grantham and York.

43238, EM 05.19 Leeds-London St. Pancras (1C15, RT), Wellingborough station
In their final few weeks of operation, the former ECML HSTs still wearing their Virgin East Coast paint scheme look a little odd on the MML. Their use was always going to be somewhat transient so repainting was probably thought to be an unnecessary extravagance. 43238 leads the 05.19 Leeds to St. Pancras service into Wellingborough station taken, unfortunately, the wrong side for the superb spring sunshine!

43320 EM 05.19 Leeds-London St. Pancras (1C15, RT), Wellingborough station
After being in operation on the MML for some thirty-eight years the fabled HSTs are about to bow out as electric services commence on the Corby to St. Pancras route. This 'cascade' will allow the HSTs to be put into short term storage and then be sent to the breaker's yard. Attracting the attention of a Royal Mail worker 43320 leaves Wellingborough station at the rear of the 1C15 05.19 Leeds to St. Pancras service.

180109, EM 07.35 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D09, RT), Nottingham station
We travelled from Wellingborough to Nottingham aboard one of EMR's newly acquired Class 180s. These units, dating from the early 2000s, are a member of the Coradia family of DMUs and have been the hot potatoes of the TOCs that have been involved with their operation! Never the most reliable of units they have been through the hands of many operators never being used for very long and the same is still true today. In its latest guise 180109 now wears its smart-looking EMR livery as it stands at Nottingham station. We had just arrived on this train having joined it at Wellingborough working the 07.35 St. Pancras to Nottingham service. With the new-build bi-modes well underway the use of the 180s is going to be short-lived so one can only wonder where they will go next if anywhere?

156473, EM 09.56 Nottingham-Skegness (2S11, 2E), Nottingham station
156473 basks in the early spring sunshine at Nottingham station. It will soon work the 09.56 service to Skegness but being still in the midst of the COVID pandemic I wonder how many holidaymakers or day-trippers will be making this fabled trip to the east coast?

158866, EM 07.38 Manchester Oxford Road-Norwich (1L05, RT), Nottingham station
Our second train of four on this lovely warm early spring day waits at Nottingham station. We took 158866 as far as Grantham where we were able to pick up an East Coast LNER service. This 1L05 EMR service started from Manchester Oxford Road at 07.38 rather than the timetabled Warrington Central. It arrived at Manchester as an empty stock working from Stockport that itself should have gone to Warrington so something had obviously gone awry!

801216 GR 09.59 Peterborough-York (1N81, RT) & 195008, NT 12.10 York-Blackpool North Carr MPD (3Z21, 1L), York station
The new faces of York station! We had just arrived aboard 801216 that had terminated as the 1N81 09.59 from Kings Cross. This was my first trip on an Azuma finding it a fast accelerating train but with the much-criticised hard seating spoiling the ride. To the right of the Azuma is a Northern Civity number 195008 that will work the 12.10 service to Blackpool North that, interestingly is actually scheduled to terminate at the town's North Carr depot after a reversal at the station.

158842, NT stabled, York station
A relatively simple and ordinary photograph of 158842 stabled in the only remaining north-facing bay platform at York station. I was unable to identify the working for this Northern unit so I presume that it was stabled throughout the day. The photograph was taken specifically to compare with ..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/25492182404/x55009-10-55-london-kings-cross-edinburgh taken some forty-three years earlier. I could not muster a Deltic nor a Class 101 in this 2021 image but the rest of what can be seen remains reassuringly similar.

68021, TP 12.00 York-Scarborough (1T31, 1E), York station
As part of the COVID 19 timetable, TransPennine Express are running regular 'shuttle' services between York and Scarborough rather than operating through services to other destinations such as Liverpool. Superpower appears to be the norm with them utilising their Nova 3 sets on these shuttles with the 12.00 York to Scarborough being worked by 68021 'Tireless' seen here waiting to leave its start point. We took this train as far as Malton making it my first trip on one of these trains.

Nameplate, 68021, TP 12.00 York-Scarborough (1T31, 1E), York station
Whilst other operators are applying naff vinyl names to their locomotives and stock it's nice to see that TPE is affixing proper cast nameplates maintaining the best traditions of the railway. 68021 'Tireless' waits to leave York station at the rear of the 1T31 12.00 shuttle service to Scarborough.

66719, 10.05 Tees Dock-Doncaster Down Decoy (19E), York station
With the great hall of the National Railway Museum in the background 66719 'Metro-Land' approaches York station running light engine. I was unable to identify the reporting number of this 10.05 Tees Dock to Doncaster Down Decoy yard unless anybody can help me out!

128XX, TP 12.00 York-Scarborough (1T31, 1E), Malton station
Having just alighted from the 12.00 York to Scarborough TPE service at Malton I turned my camera towards the Nova 3 set. It is being led by a DVT with a very noisy Class 68 at the rear. I must say that the front end design of this DVT, a modified Mk. IV coach, is very clumsy appearing as if it has lost some sort of cover over the draw gear above the buffers! The travelling experience inside the train was, however, excellent with it being eerily quiet but again spoilt by the all too common hard seating. However, my travelling companion did comment on the extreme noise emanating from 68021 as it left Malton station, something that has not gone unnoticed by many others!

Tickets, Wellingborough-Malton
Our single fare tickets from Wellingborough to Malton was reasonable value. I selected this route that was a little more interesting than the more normal route via Sheffield and Doncaster. Note that the cheapest option selected included a leg of the journey in first-class from Kettering to Nottingham.
