After an appointment at Kettering hospital, I had an hour or so in hand before I was due back at work. So I visited Kettering station and then a couple of other spots between there and Wellingborough.

221104, EM 08.49 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C27), Kettering station
221104 sweeps through Kettering's platform three with the 08.49 Sheffield to St. Pancras East Midlands Trains service. This Meridan was one of the four that, up until 2009, was operated by Hull Trains with this one carrying the name 'Sir Terry Farrell'.

222020, EM 09.29 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D19), Kettering station
222020 'City of Derby' slows for its stop at Kettering working the 1D19 09.29 St. Pancras to Nottingham. This rather anonymous photograph makes a fascinating comparison to one that I took back in 1978. Whilst the positioning is not quite the same (I had walked off the end of platform one then) and the trees have grown the lamp posts still stand ready to illuminate the once extensive yards and sidings that have now been removed, indeed I was standing just in front of the lamp post emerging from the roof of the Meridian, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29663552804/kettering-station-signal-box-curve

222013, EM 10.16 Corby-London St. Pancras (1P29), Kettering station
222013 has just arrived at Kettering station with the 10.16 Corby to St. Pancras service. In this view Kettering's relatively new (1999-2000) and vast disability-friendly footbridge dominates the scene. It is a travesty that this modern carbuncle, that has clearance for possible future electrification built-in, has been permitted on the classically Charles Henry Driver (1832–1900) designed station that is regarded as one of the best remaining examples of Midland architecture.

222012, EM 09.41 London St. Pancras-Crickelwood (via Manton Junction, reversal at Syston) ECS (5Z17), Kettering station
I am not absolutely sure as to why this rather unusually routed out and back empty stock move was taking place, perhaps it was to simply turn the unit...if anybody can advise please do contact me. 222012 passes at speed through Kettering's platform two as the 5Z17 09.41 St. Pancras to Cricklewood via Corby, Manton Junction and a reversal at Syston.

222003, EM 09.58 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F21), Kettering station
2220003 'Tornado' takes the sharp curve at Kettering station at full line speed working the 09.58 St. Pancras to Sheffield East Midlands Trains service. Note the 'nameplate' attached to the Meridian just in front of the first passenger door. I put the word nameplate in inverted commas as it is actually a vinyl stuck to the side of the unit rather than a cast plate as we are more used to; this is what our modern railway has come to!

222022, EM 10.05 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B31), Kettering station
A photograph that shows the station constructed during 1857 to the designs of C H Driver. The design is classic Midland Railway with ridge-and-furrow canopies, which span two flat-roofed, single-storey weather-boarded buildings on platforms two and three. These canopies are slightly later added during expansion between 1877 and 1879. The station is Grade II listed by Historic England who are going to have to be on top of their game if the plans to electrify the line come to fruition. 222022 'Invest In Nottingham' heads south working the 1B31 10.05 Nottingham to St. Pancras service.

222009, EM 10.01 London St. Pancras-Corby (1M21), Kettering station
222009 pauses at Kettering station working the 10.01 St. Pancras to Corby East Midlands Trains service. After the expected rows and arguments between the DfT and the franchise holder regarding track access and appropriate rolling stock regular services to and from Corby eventually began five years ago in the summer of 2009. There is now an hourly service in each direction totalling twenty-six trains per day.

43066, EM 10.15 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D22), Kettering station
I had been on Kettering station for just under an hour and this was the first HST service that passed the station. The 10.15 St. Pancras to Nottingham sweeps through platform four with power car 43066 leading. As part of Eastern Region set 254006 this power car started its life late 1977 on the ECML for testing purposes. It was this set that formed the second official '125' service on the line working the 07.40 King’s Cross-Newcastle on 08.05.78. It later moved to the Midland Mainline in the mid to late 1980s.

66742, 11.28 Wellingborough-Mountsorell (6D02), Kettering Headlands bridge SP864771
GBRf's 66742 'ABP Port of Immingham Centenary 1912-2012' leads the 6D02 11.28 Wellingborough to Mountsorrel empty stone train on the approach to Kettering taken from a small bridge at the end of Headlands Road. This relatively short turn will collect stone from Mountsorrel just north of Leicester and convey it to the virtual quarry in Wellingborough's Finedon Road yard. From here it is then taken off to various Network Rail infrastructure worksites.

222017, EM 10.58 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F25), Kettering Broadway SP864771
Rather tightly cropped for my liking but 222017 just fits in the frame! It is seen approaching Kettering from the south with the 1F25 10.58 St. Pancras to Sheffield East Midlands Trains service. It is taken from a small former road bridge now closed to traffic and pedestrianised at the end of the town's Broadway.

222006, EM 10.29 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C35), Kettering Broadway SP864771
Despite the grey sky, there is just a hint of the sun in this photograph taken in Kettering from the town's Broadway bridge. 222006 'The Carbon Cutter' is seen passing at speed having not stopped at the station that is just out of sight around the curve. The EMT Meridian is working the 10.29 Sheffield to St. Pancras 'fast' service.

222019, EM 11.05 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B36), Kettering Broadway SP864771
With the weak sun just being reflected on the nose of 222019 it is seen just south of Kettering station from the Broadway footbridge. The Meridian is working the 1B36 11.05 Nottingham to London St. Pancras service. Notice the brick revetment behind the front carriage of the train cut into the embankment. It looks as if once housed a signal box but I do not believe there was one at the south end of the yard intermediate to Kettering Station and Kettering Junction boxes with the latter about one mile south from this location....that is unless local knowledge tells me otherwise!

222014, EM 11.01 London St. Pancras-Corby (1M26), Broadway SP864771
Taking the down slow line on the approach to Kettering, 222014 prepares for its stop at the station a short distance behind where I am taking the picture on the Headlands footbridge. The Meridian is forming the 11.01 St. Pancras to Corby 1M26 service.

66011, 10.03 St. Pancras Churchyard Sidings-Ketton Ward Sidings (6F93), Station Road bridge Burton Latimer
A regular freight flow on the Midland Mainline is the 6F93 empty cement wagons from St. Pancras Churchyard sidings to Ketton cement works just west of Stamford. Unfortunately, this train has to go the extra distance via Leicester and Syston Junction rather than direct via Cobry and Manton Junction as there is no connecting spur from that line to access the eastbound line. 66011 leads the train as it trundles along the down fast line at Burton Latimer between Kettering and Wellingborough. This view is set to change in the coming few years as the second slow or relief line is to be reinstalled and then the line is to be electrified with initial preparations now underway in certain places.

Former Isham & Burton Latimer station building (C. 20.11.1950)
The buildings of the former Isham and Burton Latimer station ars still standing and very much in use but as a private residence. The station was opened by the Midland Railway in 1857. Initially, it was just named Isham becoming Isham and Burton Latimer two years later in 1859. In 1923 it was again renamed, this time becoming Buton Latimer for Isham. These changes reflect its central location between the two villages just south of Kettering on the Midland Mainline and the battle between them as to which one was dominant! The station was closed by British Railways 01.10.50.

222014, EM 12.16 Corby-London St. Pancras (1P39), site of Isham & Burton Latimer station (C. 20.11.1950)
Taking the up slow line past the site of the former Isham and Burton Latimer station (closed 01.10.50) 222014 is seen with the 12.16 Corby to St. Pancras service. In the background is the station's former goods that is now the property of breakfast cereal manufacturer Weetabix who's factory dominates the scene. They have made good use of the goods shed to support their advertising hoarding informing passing rail passengers exactly where they are passing!

43075, EM 11.32 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B38), site of Isham & Burton Latimer station (C. 20.11.1950)
Only the second HST working observed in the last two hours to pass me on the Midland Mainline near to Kettering. This service is the 1B38 11.32 Nottingham to St. Pancras and is being led by power car 43075. The train is seen passing the site of Isham and Burton Latimer station with the Weetabix factory just in view to the right, a significant local employer.
