Having taken a Greater Anglia unit north to Kilmarnock yesterday,  the ROG's Class 37 returned south again with another unit destined for its Essex base. Yet another glorious late spring day without a cloud in the sky!

66713, 03.10 Felixstowe North-Trafford Park (4M21, 25E), site of Roade station
66713 'Forest City' leads the 4M21 03.10 Felixstowe North to Trafford Park through an early morning Roade. The space in the foreground was once filled with sidings that served the Simplex/Pianoforte factory that was located to the left just out of shot. This former factory site is now occupied by a vast and controversial housing estate that is just about complete at the time of writing.

86604 & 86639, 21.25 Coatbridge-Felixstowe North (4L89, 1L), site of Roade station
86604 works with 86639 at Roade leading the 21.25 Coatbridge to Felixstowe Freightliner. These locomotives were under a fair bit of power as they passed me making a heck of a racket and going well hauling the very long and well-loaded 4L89. This photograph illustrates the mess and general detritus left by the various trackside contractors as they go about their business. This does nothing for the appearance of the railways and also acts as an attraction for thieves and vandals.

66544, 03.39 Garston-London Gateway (4L32, 9E), site of Roade station
66544 leads the 03.39 Garston to London Gateway through Roade hot on the heels of the previous Coatbridge to Felixstowe Freightliner. This morning is the start of yet another glorious day that has characterised most of May throughout the COVID-19 lockdown period.

86628 & 86613, 02.50 Felixstowe North-Garston (4M45, 35E), site of Roade station
Twenty minutes earlier I photographed the southbound 4L89, see...... https://www.theimagefile.com/?Action=MF&sa=editfile&id=29069578004 Here is the northbound 4M45 02.50 Felixstowe North to Garston hauled by another pair of vintage AL6s 86628 and 86613. I am taking every opportunity to photograph the Class 86s in what will be their last summer of operation due to Freightliner acquiring a number of ex Greater Anglia Class 90s that are being prepared for operations on their services. Due to COVID delays, this process should be more advanced than at present so the AL6s really are on borrowed time.

DR98009, DR98011, DR98004 & DR98003, 07.00 Willesden West London Junction-Rugby Depot Access Line (4E), site of Roade station
Making their way sedately along the down slow line at Roade is a quartet of Network Rail Windhoff Overhead Line Train MPVs forming the 07.00 Willesden to Rugby. The formation is made up of DR98009, DR98011, DR98004 and DR98003 that headed south two days previously but promptly failed. Class 221s, 11.43 London Euston-Preston (9P65, 7L), Ashton Road bridge
I am beginning to ramp up my photographing of Class 221 Voyagers on the WCML. This is not because I like them, in fact, the opposite is true, but their time working trains on the line is now limited. Like so many things on the railways their service to both Virgin and, more recently, Avanti West Coast will be lost in the sands of history. In their more common and double-manned formation, a pair of units head north about to pass under Ashton Road bridge near Roade working the 11.43 Euston to Preston.

DR80301 & DR80303, 10.00 Woking up yard-Guide Bridge (79L), Ashton Road bridge
A pair of Harsco Rail Technologies multi-purpose stoneblowers head north along the down slow line just south of Roade past the closed Amco Giffen worksite. DR80301 'Stephen Cornish' and DR80303 were working as the 10.00 Woking Yard to Guide Bridge, I presume in connection with weekend engineering works.

315533 & 315578, 11.53 Northampton EMD-Northampton EMD (5Q21, 1L), Ashton Road bridge
For a number of months, a collection of ex London Overground's Class 315 EMUs have been, as what is colloquially referred to, in 'warm storage'. As part of this storage, the units are periodically run to maintain their operational condition. Just south of Roade at Ashton Road bridge 315533 and 315578 head south towards Bletchley where they will return again as the 5Q21 11.53 Northampton EMUD return working. I am not absolutely sure as to why these units are being stored. If anybody can update with the thinking behind it, please contact me via https://www.ontheupfast.com/contact

66128, 07.05 Dollands Moor-DIRFT (6M45, 2L), Ashton Road bridge
Under intense blue skies with not a cloud in sight, 66128 leads the 07.05 Dollands Moor to Daventry bottled water train past Ashton Road bridge just south of Roade. With such strong overhead lighting and looking south-east during the middle of the day makes for very tricky photographic conditions as illustrated here.

37800 & 317883, 11.38 Kilmarnock Bonnytown-Ilford EMUD (5Q50, 10E), Hyde Road bridge
37800 'Cassiopeia' tows Greater Anglia 317883 through Roade cutting from Hyde Road bridge. It is running as the 11.38 Kilmarnock (Wabtec) to Ilford 5Q50 that, as usual, was running very early. The ROG Class 37 worked north the previous evening. See .... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29061996604/x37800-317340-16-16-ilford-emud-kilmarnock towing another unit to Kilmarnock for attention. It is activity such as this that keeps these vintage but highly versatile Class 37s in operation despite them being well over fifty years old - rather like myself!
