Yet another Greater Anglia unit was being taken north to Kilmarnock for work with the likelihood that one will be returned the next day. These drags from the southeast (Essex) to the northwest (East Ayrshire) are handled by the Rail Operations Group who usually utilise one of their veteran but seemingly evergreen Class 37s.

H&S team at work, Ashton Road bridge work site
Following the tragic death of a trackside worker employed by Amco Giffen (working for Network Rail) on 08.04.20 this worksite just south of Roade on the WCML has remained shut. This hi-viz clad team were actually white-collar staff and seemed to be inspecting and making a lot of notes on clipboards in addition to taking many photographs. I am sure that once the various agencies have done all their work and that the site is passed then the operation to stabilise the embankments can continue. However, in all of this, one must not forget that a man lost his life at this site and is survived by a family including children. Our thoughts must go out to them at this very difficult time.

37800, 11.13 Leicester LIP-Ilford EMUD (0L50, 3E), Ashton Road bridge
From Ashton Road bridge Europhoenix's 37800 'Cassiopeia' runs light engine from Rail Operation Group's depot at Leicester as 0L50. It is heading to Ilford depot in East London adjacent to the Great Eastern mainline. In the late afternoon, it will collect a Class 317 unit from Greater Anglia that it will drag overnight to Wabtec in Kilmarnock. Despite being nearly sixty years old these veteran Type 3s still are very much in evidence and going competently about their business which is an astounding feat all things considered!

37800 & 317340, 16.16 Ilford EMUD-Kilmarnock Bonnytown (5Q28, 15E), Ashton Road bridge
Having seen 37800 'Cassiopeia' work light engine earlier in the day I was awaiting its return in anticipation of a smashing photograph in the low evening sunshine. However, things went wrong when towing 317340 somewhere in north London and it lost a lot of time. As it was dinner time (and my turn to cook!) I had to make do with the spot that was the nearest to home and quickest to get to! Unfortunately, by the time the train arrived the sun had just dipped behind a line of tall trees behind me that put it in deep shadow. I have done the best that I can with Photoshop so this offering will have to do! The 16.16 Ilford to Kilmarnock runs through the night arriving at the Scottish facility at breakfast time the next day. In this particular case it caught up all of its lost time arriving fifteen minutes early. By the way, dinner was smashing and I am allowed out again to play!
