Having had our first day exploring the delightful city of Copenhagen I took a walk to explore the Central station. There were no entry restrictions and no suspicious second glances when taking pictures. I found a great deal of diesel hauled services despite the station being fully wired that was odd as I discovered later in the week that the wires were strung well out into the countryside.

1514, 17.56 Copenhagen Central-Kalundborg, Copenhagen Central station
At the heart of Danish State Railways (DSB) locomotive fleet is thirty-seven Class ME Co-Co diesel electrics. Dating from the early 1980s these powerful locomotives operate throughout their network on push-pull double-decker trains. At Copenhagen Central station, 1514 will soon depart with the 17.56 to Kalundborg. Kalundborg is a town of sixteen thousand people sixty-eight miles from Copenhagen.

1536, 18.11 Copenhagen Central-Nykøbing Falster, Copenhagen Central station
Amid a lot of engine noise and a screaming turbocharger, in a sound, something akin to Paxman Valenta HST soundtrack, 1536 leaves Copenhagen Central station with the 18.11 to Nykøbing Falster.

DVT & 1536, 18.11 Copenhagen Central-Nykøbing Falster, Copenhagen Central station
The 18.11 Copenhagen Central to Nykøbing Falster weaves its way away from the Danish capital. This image shows the DVT at the rear of the formation and clearly illustrates the extraordinary loading gauge of DSB that allows the use of this double-decker stock. Leading the train is one of the Class ME diesel locomotives 1536.

5037, unidentified working, Copenhagen Central station
I am not convinced about the design of the IC3 units as seen here at Copenhagen Central station. Their front end huge rubber diaphragms are designed to form an airtight seal when working in tandem with the whole of the driver's door and window folding away to provide a wide through gangway between sets. With the world-famous Tivoli Gardens Himmelskibet (En. Star Flyer) swing ride in the background, 5037 'Doctor Larsen' departs with an unidentified working.

4523, Copenhagen Central-Copenhagen Airport working, Copenhagen Central station
These IR4 units appear very similar to the IR3 units but they have no engines as they are the electric version of the same units! They were introduced in 2000 built by Adtranz in Sweden and operate on both DB and SJ (Sweedish railways) despite the two networks having different electrical specification, 25kV versus 15kV respectively. 4523 leads set XX23 out of Copenhagen Central station forming a shuttle service to the international airport.

5505, 13.12 Berlin-Copenhagen Central, 5275 & 5250, unidentified workings, Copenhagen Central station
A busy evening scene to the southern end of Copenhagen central station. On the far side, a Class 605 ICE service arrives from Germany as the 13.12 Berlin to Copenhagen Central. This unit, 5505, is jointly operated by DB and DSB and will have travelled on the Scandlines ferry to get from Puttgarden to Rødby over the Ostee from mainland Europe to Scandinavia. In the foreground, two IC3s work unidentified services. To the left is set XX75 'The Soldier' and to the right is set XX50 'Poul Due Jensen'.

2034, 13.21 Stockholm Central-Copenhagen Central, Copenhagen Central station
I am sure that when they were new back in 1990 that the XP2000 tilting sets were an eye-opening and cutting edge design. However, I cannot help think that the design looks somewhat dated now and if I'm honest, a little ugly! Statens Järnvägar's (En. SJ, Sweedish state railways) 2034 arrives at Copenhagen central with the 13.21 service from Stockholm Central. These five or six-car sets have a top speed of only one hundred and twenty miles per hour but revolutionised train travel in Sweeden and have proved to be a successful design.

3022, 18.37 Østerport-Ringsted, Copenhagen Central station
A rather tatty Class EA number 3022 'Søren Frich' leaves Copenhagen Central with the 18.37 Østerport to Ringsted a journey of just under forty miles. 3022 is the final member of the EA class of electric locomotives built in 1992 by Scandia.

1521 & 1527, unidentified workings, Copenhagen Central station
Two DSB ME diesels wait noisily at the southern end of Copenhagen Central station. 1521 to the left will leave towards me whilst 1527 to the right will depart for Østerport. In a world where the drive for electrification seems relentless, I am not at all sure how much longer these Henschel built railway dinosaurs will be around?
