After meeting Andy at Milton Keynes station we headed for Euston. We then took the sleeper through the night walking up passing through the magnificent Highlands. However, I did stir on arrival at Edinburgh where some shunting induced jolting ensued! We enjoyed our Mk. III experience especially dinner in the dining car.

60009, 15.40 Crewe-Southall WCR (5V42), Milton Keynes station
60009 'Union of South Africa' works south through Milton Keynes Central in steam and towing just a support coach. It was working the 15.40 5V42 Crewe to West Coast's Southall facility. Notice that the hutter has been pressed as the chime whistle is just being blown!

221107, VT 18.10 London Euston-Holyhead & Wrexham (1D92), Milton Keynes station
The 18.10 Euston to Holyhead Virgin service arrives at Milton Keynes Central being worked by 221107 'Sir Martin Frobisher'. The Voyager is named after the notable explorer who made three voyages to the New World searching for the fabled North-west Passage who is his later life was knighted for his efforts to help defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588.

377202, SN 17.10. East Croydon-Milton Keynes (2M55), Milton Keynes station
Against a dramatic English summer sky, 377202 arrives at Milton Keynes with the terminating 17.10 Southern service from East Croydon. Also in the background is Milton Keynes' station block that houses the somewhat now inadequate concourse to which the footbridge joins. The station and its surrounds were designed by Stuart Mosscrop and it was opened to great fanfare in 1982.

221143, VT 17.35 Chester-London Euston (1A58), London Euston station
221143 'Auguste Picard' rests on the stops at London Euston's platform eighteen with passengers alighting no doubt cursing the long walk to the concourse from this remote and desolate part of the terminus. Andy and I had travelled down from Milton Keynes on this service, the 1A35 17.35 from Chester.

RTT display on Blackberry, London Euston station
Whilst enjoying a drink in a bar at London Euston station Andy and I took the opportunity to check RTT on the passage of our train. As can be seen from the screen of my Blackberry, the 1S25 sleeper is due to depart from platform fifteen at 21.15. We were both looking forward to this as neither Andy or I had travelled on a sleeper service actually using the mattresses even though both of us had travelled in the day coaches many times.

90026, CS 21.16 London Euston-Inverness, Fort William & Aberdeen (1S25), London Euston station
It's just before 21.00 with the last vestiges of the day still illuminating the scene at Euston station. 90026 is almost off the end of the very long platform fifteen with the equally long 21.15 sleeper train occupying its entirety. Andy and I would enjoy haulage behind this Class 91 all the way to Scotland with it being detached at Edinburgh Wavelery even though we were in a state of slumber for most of the journey! Notice the evidence of previous operators on the side of the Mk. III sleeper coach in the shape of the First Group logo and the ScotRail wording.

90045, CS 19.34 Wembley InterCity Depot-London Euston sleeper ECS (5S95) & 47712, stabled Thunderbird, London Euston station
At the end of platform fifteen of Euston 90043 is pictured having brought the Highland Sleeper empty coaching stock into the station from Wembley. As can be seen, the Class 90 is being hired in from Freightliner to undertake these very short journies. At the adjacent platform DRS' 47712 'Pride of Carlisle' is the acting Thunderbird for the London area of the WCML waiting to assist any miscreant train that disgraces itself!

Tickets, Milton Keynes-London Euston
Our tickets from Milton Keynes to Euston cost the grand total of £5 each......not bad value I suppose!

Tickets & coach sticker, London Euston-Fort William sleeper
Our tickets on the Caledonian Sleeper were eligible for a tw0-together discount bringing the fare down to a reasonable £112 each. As can be seen, we shared a twin birth cabin in Coach F and found the whole experience very nice. Whilst a little cramped, and neither Andy or I are big chaps, we slept well. I was woken twice, once when some splitting and shunting took place at Edinburgh Waverley and a number of times by Andy's snoring! We both woke properly as we were climbing away from Glasgow up towards Helensburgh and once dressed we sat in the day coach to take in the grandeur of the Highlands from the comfort of a Mk. III!
