A much brighter day and after our walk around Kraków's Jewish quarter, I headed for the station again.

Frontage, former Kraków Glówny station
Against a brilliant blue afternoon sky, the frontage of the former Kraków Glówny station looks very grand. The station closed to customers in 2014 but it still wears its PKP name in huge illuminated letters atop the roof. The building has now been put to various new uses including a museum.

EP09-002, 13.21 Wroclaw Glówny-Lublin Glówny (IC6202), Kraków Glówny station
Built by the Polish manufacturer Pafawag (now part of Bombardier Transportation Polska) in the late 1980s the Bo-Bo class EP09 number some forty-seven examples. EP09-002 arrives at Kraków Glówny leading the 13.21 Wroclaw Glówny to Lublin Glówny.

EN77-004, 16.50 Kraków Glówny-Miechów, Kraków Glówny station
EN77-004 leaves Kraków Glówny with the 16.50 to Miechów, a town of some twelve thousand people due north of Kraków. Whilst the EN77s look very modern and are capable units that seemed to accelerate quickly, I am not convinced about their front end design!

Safety poster, Kraków-Glówny station
I saw a number of these posters around Kraków Glówny station and even without doing any translation I think that I understood the message! The railways in Poland seemed to be typically open as in much of mainland Europe with a lack of fencing and random crossing points that were not signed. Despite this, PKP seems to be promoting safety on level crossings under the title of 'safe crossing'. Google Translate did a reasonable job in identifying the wording but it was as to be expected with the girl voicing the message, 'Think on Crossing Sweetheart' and the mantra 'Listen, Voice, Reason' written above her image. Also notice at the bottom of the poster that the EU has promoted this campaign as well as PKP and the Polish regional government.

ED160-020, 09.27 Olsztyn Glówny-Kraków Glówny (IC5324), Kraków Glówny station
Even on Polish Railways units are used on long-distance routes. ED160-020 arrives at Kraków where it is terminating with the 09.27 from Olsztyn. The four-car Flirt InterCity EMUs entered service in 2015 with seventy per cent of the funding coming from the EU. They operate long-distance services on the PKP network and, in this case, ED160-020 has travelled from Olsztyn, a large town well north of Wroclaw and the capital of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.

EP07-1014, Kraków-Glówny station
The EP07 class is a recent modification of the EU07 that has new traction motors and altered gear ratios to make them better suited for hauling passenger trains rather than as mixed traffic locomotives for which they were designed in the mid-1960s. If EP07-1014 looks familiar as it prepares to join a train at Kraków station that is because it is based on our own Class 83 locomotives hence their nickname in Poland of 'Anglik' (The Englishman).

ED0250-004, 17.07-Kraków Glówny-Warszawa Wschodnia (EIP3102), Kraków Glówny station
A Polish Pendolino leaves Kraków Glóeny station with the 17.07 high-speed service to Warszawa Wschodnia station. ED250-004 is one of twenty Pendolinos that operate on a number of Polish Railways' high-speed lines that are beginning to transform their network. Personally, I think that these ED250s look much smarter than our own Class 390s but they do represent the next evolutionary stage of this family of trains.

EP07-1014, 13.21 Wroclaw Glówny-Lublin Glówny (IC62202-Hetman), Kraków-Glówny station
My last photograph of a Polish train on this visit and a special one it is too! This image shows the 13.21 Wroclaw Glówny to Lublin Glówny that forms part of 'The Hetman' titled train. This train joins together with another at Debica Junction. The combined distance of 'The Hetman' is eight hundred and ninety-five kilometres. EP07-1014 will lead this part of the train to Lublin, the ninth-largest city in Poland and, as this portion of the train is only four coaches long, it should have no difficulty undertaking the task.

Frontage, former Kraków Glówny station
Up until about 2014 the front of this fine former station was plagued and choked by buses and taxis and there was nowhere for pedestrians to promenade. Following the closure of the station and the opening of a transport interchange, a very short distance away, the area has undergone a massive improvement. With the sun having set, the moon shines above the former Upper Silesian Railway station that was opened in 1847. With its closure, it has been extensively refurbished and is now a multiple-use structure with such things as a museum to attract visitors rather than travellers!
