After visiting Bethnal Green station I took the train into Liverpool Street and a tube ride to Paddington. I was there for about an hour and saw just one HST, the takeover by the IETs is about complete.

317342, LE 13.24 London Liverpool Street-Cambridge (2H30, 1E), Bethnal Green station
On of the original class 317/1s, 317342 passes through Bethnal Green station working the 13.24 Liverpool Street to Cambridge. Time has been called on this unit and the others of this class as the new class 720s are set to be introduced. Their final journey will be to the scrap man

317708, LO 12.40 Chingford-London Liverpool Street (2T61, 1E), Bethnal Green station
317708 arrives at Bethnal Green station near to the end of its journey working the 12.40 Chingford to Liverpool Street. This particular unit is operated by London Overground (LO) and looks smart having been overhauled in the last few years. Whilst other operators will be withdrawing their fleet of these vintage electric multiple units imminently, LO will not be doing so quite yet.

90013, GE 13.00 London Liverpool Street-Norwich (1P30, 1E), Bethnal Green station
Not a great picture in terms of its composition and it's a going-away shot but, unbelievably, it's my only picture to date of 90013. This completes the set in terms of a picture of all of the fifteen class 90s operated by Greater Anglia. It is propelling the 13.00 Liverpool Street to Norwich past Bethnal Green station.

315812, LO 13.00 London Liverpool Street-Enfield Town (2U42, 1L), Bethnal Green station
London Overground operated 315812 comes to a halt at Bethnal Green station woking the 13.00 Liverpool Street to Enfield Town 2U42 service. Despite being overhauled in the last three of four years, this 39 year old unit will be withdrawn in the next couple of months or so as the class 710 Aventra units are introduced.

315803, LO 13.03 London Liverpool Street-Chingford (2T56, RT), Bethnal Green station
313803 enters Bethan Green station working the 13.03 Liverpool Street to Chingford service. This unit is one of a sub class of seventeen operated by London Overground. All are imminently going to be withdrawn and scrapped having been in-service for very nearly forty years. I wonder if their replacements, the class 710 Aventras, will last as long?

317884, LE 12.04 Cambridge-London Liverpool Street (2H29, 1L), Bethnal Green station
317884 passes through Bethanl Green station forming the 12.04 Cambridge to London Liverpool Street. This service is operated by Greater Anglia who will soon be withdrawing these veteran EMUs to replace them with the class 720s. I am sure that the commuters to and from Cambridge will appreciate the new units, not least their air conditioned interiors!

360117, LE 1.52 Ipswich-London Liverpool Street (1Y39, 1E), Bethnal Green station
Despite being identical to the class 350 Desiros apart from lacking the inter-connecting doors, in my mind the class 360s look totally different; it's strange how the eye and brain perceives an object. Greater Anglia operated 360117 passes Bethnal Green on the GEML working the 13.52 Ipswich to Liverpool Street. Along with the older class 31X units, these 360s will be withdrawn from this route soon as the class 710s are introduced. However, the class 360s are likely to find work elsewhere where as the veteran class 31Xs will be withdrawn and cut-up.

90005, LE 11.30 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P33, 1L), Bethnal Green station
90005 'Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson' passes Bethnal Green leading the 11.30 Norwich to Liverpool Street station. Very soon, these locomotives and the Mk. III slam-door stock will be withdrawn from this route to be replaced by brand new units.

360115, 12.54 Ilford EMUD-London Liverpool Street ECS (5F54), Bethnal Green station
The 12.54 Ilford to Liverpool Street ECS move is seen passing Bethnal Green. 360115 is forming the train that will then work back out a little later as the 13.38 Liverpool Street to Colchester.

317340 & 317510, LE 13.12 London Liverpool Street-Hertford East (2O32, 2L), Bethnal Green station
Two Greater Anglia class 317s, numbers 317340 and 317510 stop at Bethnal Green station forming the 13.12 Liverpool Street to Hertford East service. The familiar site of these units, very nearly forty years old will soon become a thing of the past for east Londoners as they are about to be withdrawn and will then make their final journey to the scrap man.

315811, LO 12.55 Chingford-London Liverpool Street (2T63, RT), Bethnal Green station
Touching in and out my Oyster card enabled me to make the very short journey from Bethnal Green into Liverpool Street. Here, 315811 arrives into Bethnal Green station forming the 12.55 Chingford to Liverpool Street service. This will probably be the last time that I will travel on a 31X EMU as scheduled withdrawal is anytime now with some units having already gone to the breakers.

Interior, 315811, LO 12.55 Chingford-London Liverpool Street (2T63, RT), Bethnal Green station
When the class 315s entered service in 1980/1 I am sure that the interiors were seen to be very modern and up-to-date. In my opinion, nearly forty years on, they still don't look too bad being light, airy and having comfortable seats covered in a traditional moquette. They have had a number of overhauls with the latest being as recent as 2015 but this has not been enough to save them. This carriage of set 315811, along with all the others, will soon be going to the scrap man and confined to railway history.

Interior, London Liverpool Street station
The grand interior of London Liverpool Street station taken from platform one. Whilst the station roof today looks very impressive by the 1970s it had become very dirty and structurally unsafe. BR proposed its complete removal and the rebuilding of the station probably utilising the brutalist concrete style of the time. However, thanks to a campaign led by the Poet Laureate, Sir John Betjemaman, a public enquiry was set-up and this resulted in a reprieve for the station in 1977 and it was comprehensively renovated at huge expense. Subsequent developments have kept it all intact and what a superb example of Victorian opulence and confidence it remains today!

90006, GA 13.30 London Liverpool Street-Norwich (1P32, RT) & 90005, GA 14.00 London Liverpool Street-Norwich (1P34, 1L) London Liverpool Street station
A scene at London Liverpool Street's station that has been a familiar one for a number of years now as two class 90s sit on the blocks. To the left, 90006 will soon leave with the 13.30 to Norwich. Next to it, 90005 'Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson' will leave a little later with the 14.00 service. Time is about to be called on these 1980s locomotives and the slam-door stock on this route with the imminent introduction of the class 745 Stadler FLIRT EMUs. Whilst the class 90s will probably find other work, the stock will go to the scrap man. Notice in the background, next to the passenger information screens, the ex NSE 'click clack' clock still keeping good time. This particular example, which could be up to thirty-six years old, still retains its distinctive NSE red, blue and grey slash at the bottom of the case. There are fewer and fewer of these clocks still in use now, there is, in fact, a website dedicated to them!

43188, GW 15.03 London Paddington-Penzance (1C86, 2E), London Paddington station
During an hour or so at London Paddington, this was the only HST I saw such has been the virtually complete take-over by the class 800 IETs. Unless I visit again in the next few weeks, I suspect that this will be the last time I will see one there. Who would ever have thought that I might mourn their absence when one remembers what they themselves ousted in the 1970s and 1980s where introduced and dubbed as the 'flying banana'! 43188 with its Welsh dragon vinyls stands at the rear of the 15.03 to Penzance still running and advertised as 'The Cornishman'. 43188 was part of the final delivery of HSTs from the summer of 1982 being one power car of 253053 that saw initial service on the NE/SW route.

800016, GW 15.22 London Paddington-Worcester Foregate Street (1W31, 27L, cancelled from Worcester Shrub Hill) & class 803, GW 15.15 London Paddington-Cardiff Central (1B48, 5L), London Paddington station
The new order at London Paddington station sees 800016 at platform nine that will depart with the 15.22 to Worcester Foregate Street, Unfortunately, something went wrong on its journey as it arrived nearly thirty minutes late at Worcester Shrub Hill and was terminated. Next to it, an unidentified 800/3, one of the nine-car sets, waits to leave with the 15.15 1B48 service to Cardiff central. I hope that passengers aboard had brought their feather cushions to make the journey more comfortable on the infamously hard seats installed in these trains!

Frontage, Paddington TFL station
The elegant entrance building to the old Metropolitan Line at Paddington on Praed Street. This is one of TFL's network busiest station interchanges being served by the Bakerloo, Hammersmith and City, Circle and District lines. How many travellers take a second to look up at the building they enter, possibly day after day?
