The journey down to London. I also had a hour at King's Cross in the afternoon.

390136, VT 08.51 London Euston-Wolverhampton (9G02, RT), Northampton station
390136 'City of Coventry' passes through Northampton station with the diverted 08.51 Euston to Wolverhampton service. It is not unusual for trains to be diverted off the Weedon loop on Sunday mornings following engineering works on this section of line.

350252, LN 10.10 Northampton-London Euston (2N04, 3L) & 390148, VT 08.00 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A02, 2E), Northampton station
Our train south from Northampton to London Euston waits at platform one formed of 350252. This 10.10 service is one of the 'slow' stoppers that calls at virtually every station south to Euston! To the left, the rear of Virgin Trains' 390148 'Flying Scouseman' passes through the centre road forming the 1A02 08.00 Manchester to Euston service.

66532, unidentified up Freightliner, Wembley yard
66532 'P&O Nedlloyd Atlas' sits at the head of an unidentified Freightliner in Wembley yard. This is one of my most photographed class 66s that I have many images of at various locations.

90039, stabled, Wembley yard
Sitting in the middle of the vast expanse of Wembley yard, 90039 is seen looking a little forlorn. It has been sitting in this spot for some time now so I wonder if it is on-notice having a problem. 90039 was introduced into service based at nearby Willesden in April 1990.

700111, GN 15.12 London King`s Cross-Peterborough (1P42, RT), London King`s Cross station
With the take-over of the Great Northern local services complete 700111 arrives at King's Cross with the 15.12 from Peterborough. The incessant changing scene at King's Cross continues with the building on the site of the former famed diesel depot nearing completion. In addition, the extensive re-modelling of King's Cross' lines with the reinstatement of the redundant third tunnel is due to start next year in 2020.

Nameplate, 43302, GR 15.30 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh (1S23, 3L), London King`s Cross station
Not so much a commemorative plaque as a sticker attached to the side of HST 43302 at King's Cross station. With clever use of computer graphics and digital printing, the vinyl sticker tells an interesting bit of history about the power car as it waits to leave with the 1S23 15.30 to Edinburgh. The HSTs are very much in the final few months of operation on this route with the imminent introduction into service of the Azumas. It is episodes such as this one recorded here that make us realise how important the HSTs have been in the development of the railways over the last four decades.

43302, GR 15.30 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh (1S23, 3L), London King`s Cross station
Standing under the grandeur of one of King's Cross' station arches 43302 waits to leave with the 15.30 to Edinburgh. I hope that the passengers aboard appreciate the comfort of the Mk. III coaches with their soft seating as their ride will become a lot harder next month when the Azumas are introduced with their infamous seats!

91129, GR 16.00 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh (1S24, 4L), 91106, GR 16.05 London King`s Cross-Leeds (1D21, RT) & 43302, GR 15.30 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh (1S23, 3L), London King`s Cross station
A familiar site at King's Cross station but one that is set to change within a month as the Azumas are scheduled to be introduced. To the left, 91129 waits at the head of the 16.00 to Edinburgh. In the centre is 91106 that will lead the 16.05 to Leeds whilst 43302 will work the 15.30 to Edinburgh. The future of all these train sets and their locomotives is unclear as the new order takes over. It is looking likely that at least some of the Mk. IVs and their class 91s will end up on the WCML being used by the open access operator Great North Western Railway.

91121, GR 13.05 Leeds-London King`s Cross (1A31, 6L), London King`s-Cross station
91121 has just arrived at King's Cross' platform six having worked the 13.05 from Leeds. Notice that this class 91 is wearing its unique pride graphics. I have said it before, but I'll say it again, I like these 6 300hp class 91s, they are fast, powerful, noisy and have been worthy replacements for the previous locomotives that have graced the ECML over the years.

180108, GC 15.50 London King`s Cross-Bradford Interchange (1D93, RT), London King`s Cross station
Inside the grand train shed at King's Cross, now a totally different place to when I first visited in the mid-1970s. Then, the glazing was filthy allowing in very little natural light, the paintwork was peeling and the brickwork stained from years of steam-age pollution and Deltic exhaust! Today it's a smashing place and quite transformed from this earlier era. 180108 'William Shakespeare' waits to leave with the Grand Central 15.50 service to Bradford Interchange. The 13.05 from Leeds has arrived in the adjacent platform a few minutes earlier. However, an on-board fault caused the doors to shut too early on arrival trapping passengers who were a little slow disembarking and stopping the cleaning crew getting on the train. The train had to be moved forward a short distance and, as can be seen in this image, the doors reopened.

Nameplate, 180108, GC 15.50 London King s Cross-Bradford Interchange (1D93, RT), London King`s Cross station
Another example of the 'dumbing down' on the railways! No more classic cast nameplates, just vinyls disguised to look like their genuine counterparts! Here, 180108 displays its 'William Shakespeare' name'plate' at King's Cross. It is about to work the 15.50 Grand Central 1D93 service to Bradford Interchange.

Nameplate, 91114, GR 11.00 Edinburgh-London King`s Cross (1E12, 7L), London King`s Cross station
The proper cast nameplate on the side of 91114 has a strange pink hue to it! I am not sure if this is as it was first produced or if it was originally red and that it has faded? The 91 has just arrived at King's Cross at the rear of the 11.00 service from Edinburgh.

43311, GR 11.20 Edinburgh-London King`s-Cross (1E95, 12L), London King`s Cross station
The 1E95 11.20 from Edinburgh pulls slowly into London King's Cross having completed its 392 mile journey, one that it has done thousands of times. However, this is all about to change over the coning few months as the Azumas finally enter service on the ECML opening up another chapter in the line's long and varied history.

Frontage, King`s Cross station
I have taken a number of pictures of King's Cross' frontage over time. It was designed by Lewis Cubitt for the Great Northern Railway and was opened in 1852. Cubitt came from a family of architects who all made their mark on London's skyline during Victorian times. The main feature of the frontage is the superb central clock tower that contained a treble, a tenor and a bass bell, the latter weighing 1 ton 9 cwt (1.47 tonnes). Recent work by Network Rail has really opened up the frontage again after various schemes under BR hid it from view.

Tickets, Northampton-London Euston
Our outward tickets from Northampton to Euston. At £75 for a return journey, not a cheap trip given that railcard discount was loaded on and that they were off-peak.
