THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2016 > 41. TSR at Roade-30.08.16
A temporary speed restriction on the up and down slow lines at Roade was enforced over the whole of the August Bank Holiday weekend. This involved a enforcer and observer trackside ensuring that everything went to plan.

Class 221, VT 11.35 Chester-London Euston (1A28), A508 bridge
A class 221 slows to walking pace as it approaches freshly laid ballast forming the 11.35 Chester to London Euston. The picture is taken from the A508 road bridge in the village of Roade.

Class 390, VT 12.30 London Euston-Glasgow Central (1S63), Pianoforte site
Not a shot that I would normally take but it was for a particular purpose. As can be seen from the foreground, the old Pianoforte site in Roade has been flattened, a task that took two years due to higher than expected levels of polluted ground that needed dealing with. Soon, this land will morph into a huge housing development thus blocking any view of the line from this position. Incidentally, this housing development has not been welcomed by many in the village of Roade, including us, as it will impinge on our view (Bloody NIMDYs!)

Cause of TSR on down fast, Ashton Road bridge
As can be clearly seen in this picture, over the previous night, extensive re-ballasting took place on the down fast line just south of Roade. With the bedroom windows open we could hear all the work taking place overnight including some rail grinding! With the new ballast looking very fresh there was still a walking-pace TSR over this section of track. Just out if sight in the greenery below the he picture was an observer with a flag monitoring the passage of every train. On the distant skyline is the impressive spire of the Grade I listed St. James' the great parish church of Hanslope.

Class 221, VT 12.43 London Euston-Edinburgh Waverley (9S70), passing the TSR, Ashton Road bridge
A look at the metadata for this image would see that the shutter speed used was only 1/400th sec. This would normally result in a very blurred image at this location on Ashton Road bridge just south of Roade on the WCML. However, due to the fresh ballast lad the previous night, there was a walking pace temporary speed restriction in operation. A class 221 is seen forming the 9S70 12.43 Euston to Edinburgh.

350119, LM 12.46 London Euston-Crewe (1U35), passing the TSR, Ashton Road bridge
350119 at walking pace passing through a temporary speed restriction between Roade and Ashton on the southern WCML. The cause of the TSR was the emergency application of fresh ballast that had yet to be tamped properly, this was done the following night, an activity that we could hear being undertaken from our house a short distance from this location.

390011, VT 13.00 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H26), passing the TSR, Ashton Road bridge
390011 'City of Lichfield' passes, at walking pace, over a TSR just south of Roade forming the Virgin Trains' 13.00 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly. Just noticeable, sitting on the afternoon sun, trackside is an observer who was checking the passage of all trains over the freshly repaired section of track and the fresh ballast that was yet to be tamped to a proper finish.

390128, VT 13.03 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (9G22), passing the TSR, Ashton Road bridge
390128 'City of Preston' passes between Ashton and Roade on the WCML just across the filed from my home. This is an everyday scene and not one that I would normally capture like this, the wrong side of the sun. However, a shutter speed of 1/400th sec. is all that was needed to capture this train, normally I would use 1/1600th sec. This was because all up and down fast services were at walking pace past this location due to re-ballasting taking place the previous night following track repairs. The tamping had not been completed being finished over the night to come.

66426 12.37 Daventry-Purfleet (4L48), passing the TSR, Ashton Road bridge
66426 leads the 12.37 Daventry to Purfleet 4L48 Freightliner that is about to pass under Ashton Road bridge with the village of Roade in the background. The white building seen above the trees is the former Station Master's house that stands above the site of the old station that closed on 07.09.64.
