158726, SR 16.23 Edinburgh Waverley-Tweedbank (2T98), top of Jacob`s Ladder
As there was steam heading out along the Border's Railway the following day I thought I would try for something other than a station shot. I had spied the steps, later found out to be called Jacob's Ladder, that climb steeply up over Carlton Tunnels to the east of the station. I thought that there might be an opportunity for some interesting pictures and my hunch was correct with a great view of the throat of Waverley station below. Here, 158726 leaves working the 16.23 to Tweedbank.

158702, SR 15.31 Tweedbank-Edinburgh Waverley (2T91), top of Jacob`s Ladder
Taken from the top of Jacob's ladder steps, 158702 rolls into Edinburgh Waverley with the 15.31 from Tweedbank. I would really fancy having a job in the office overlooking the station throat on the left of this image but I should that I would be trifle distracted during a boring meeting by all the comings and goings outside! This building, called Waverley Court, is the home of the City of Edinburgh's Council.

43367, GR 12.00 London King`s Cross-Inverness (1S16), top of Jacob`s Ladder
Power car 43367 'Deltic 50 1955-2005' brings up the rear of the 12.00 King's Cross to Inverness into Edinburgh Waverley taken from a superb vantage point at the top of the Jacob's Ladder steps. I do not know if it was this power car at fault, but unfortunately, this service was failed at Perth and terminated. I suspect that the disgruntled passengers would have had to transfer to a following unit to complete their journey northward; not quite in the style that they would have been expecting!

82226, GR 16.30 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (1E23), top of Jacob`s Ladder
DVT 82226 leads the 1E23 16.30 Edinburgh to King's Cross out of Waverley station. The picture is taken from the top of Carlton North tunnel. This image shows the much simplified track layout in the throat of Waverley station. However, the increasing number of trains being forced through, what is essentially a double track layout, is causing some problems now. The situation has been exacerbated by the number of Border's Railway services using this route.

158733, SR 16.54 Edinburgh Waverley-Tweedbank (2T50), Edinburgh Waverley station
This image clearly shows the popularity of the Border's railway to Tweedbank. Trains are heavily loaded with two-car 158 units proving to be inadequate to handle the numbers. It's heartening to see a new railway such as this being so popular but I hope that it doe not become a victim of its own success. 158733 will soon be leaving Edinburgh with the 16.54 to Tweedbank.

334026 & 334017, SR 16.49 Edinburgh Waverley-Helensburgh Central (2H59), Edinburgh Waverley station
A two-set late afternoon service formed by 334026 and 334017 is seen leaving Edinburgh Waverley with the 16.49 to Helensburgh Central. A fascinating journey that crosses Scotland from east to west passing through its two main cities.

Roof & Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh Waverley station
Whenever I visit one of the UK's 'grand' stations I always take the opportunity to look upwards hopefully avoiding all the other users dashing round like ants rarely taking their eyes off their devices! The roof at Edinburgh Waverley is a grand affair that lets a huge amount of natural light in flooding the concourse and platforms. Through the recently restored roof glazing, the ex North British Hotel is seen now rather ostentatiously re-named the Balmoral Hotel.

91115, GR 17.00 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (1E24), Edinburgh Waverley station
In glorious late afternoon sunshine at Edinburgh, 91115 'Blaydon Races' propels the 1E24 17.00 to King's Cross out of the station. These powerful and fast electrics have done a good job powering up and down the ECML for nearly thirty years now but are soon to be retired following the introduction of the Hitachi IETs.
