Whilst my wife and son slept in on a Sunday morning, I went out just east of Waverley up the top of the Jacob's Ladder steps to see the first run out of Scotrail's Border Line stream special.

43239, GR 09.10 Edinburgh Waverley-Aberdeen (1A55), Edinburgh Waverley station
Even though it's 08.30 on a Sunday morning, platform nine at Edinburgh Waverley is busy with passengers as they board the 09.10 to Aberdeen. The rear power car seen here is 43239, formally 43019, that was part of set 253019 that, as a Western Region set, I saw and photographed several times as a young spotter in the 1970s.

91132, GR 09.00 Edinburgh Waverly-London King`s Cross (1E08), Edinburgh Waverley station
The first up Sunday London train waits to leave Edinburgh Waverley with 91132 about to do all the work at the rear. The 1E08 is the 09.00 to King's Cross and is seen at platform two approximately three minutes prior to departure.

220026, XC 09.08 Edinburgh Waverley-Penzance (1V56), Edinburgh Waverley station
This service will reach its destination, Penzance, in about eleven hours time! 220026 waits at platform seven with the 09.08 1V56 service.

220026, seen a little earlier in Waverley station, passes through the throat of the station working the 09.08 to Penzance. It is seen from Jacob's Ladder steps that is cut into the granite rock of Calton Mount.

170247, SR 09.11 Edinburgh Waverley-Tweedbank (2T66), top of Jacob`s Ladder
170247 leads another unit out of Waverley station forming the 09.11 to Tweedbank. The image is taken from the top of Jacob's Ladder with the train about to enter Calton North tunnel. Notice the 'cows' grazing on the roof of the adjacent Edinburgh City Council building and car park to the far left. I suspect that they are made of a more modern and lighter material than famous Milton Keynes concrete examples that can be seen from the WCML.

43208, GR 09.30 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (1E09), top of Jacob`s Ladder
The 09.30 HST service leaves Edinburgh forming the 09.30 to London King's Cross with power car 43208 'Lincolnshire Echo' leading. This view, from the top of Edinburgh's famous Jacob's Ladder steps, offers a great vista of the old town on the hill in the background.

46100, outward leg of ScotRail Border`s Railway steam special, Edinburgh Waverley-Tweedbank (1Z22), top of Jacob s Ladder
Throughout the summer, ScotRail have been operating regular steam excursion up and down the newly re-opened Border's Railway. These have proved to be incredibly successful both with locals and tourists alike. Taken from the top of Jacob's Ladder, the 1Z22 09.46 to Tweedbank is seen easing out of Edinburgh Waverley with class 7P 4-6-0 46100 'Royal Scot' leading. Out of sight on the rear is a class 67 that will haul the train back from Tweedbank later in the morning.

With Edinburgh's Old Town in the background 46100 'Royal Scot' eases out of Waverley station with the 09.46 steam special to Tweedbank. The train is about to enter Calton North tunnel that is just below me as I stand on a wall adjacent to Regent Road atop Calton Hill. The type 7P 4-6-0 will lead the train all the way to Tweedbank from where a class 67, attached to the rear in this image, will haul the return journey. Later in the day the service is repeated with an afternoon run taking place.

221134, XC 10.08 Edinburgh Waverley-Plymouth (1V58), Edinburgh Waverley station
Super Voyager 221134 leaves Edinburgh Waverley station's platform seven working the CrossCountry 10.08 to Plymouth. I have said it before, but I am not sure that I would want to do to much of this journey in one of these noisy, cramped and uncomfortable units that really are not suitable for long-distance journeys.

350407, TP 10.12 Edinburgh Waverley-Manchester Airport (1M95), Edinburgh Waverley station
In its rather garish TPE livery, 350407 waits to leave Edinburgh Waverley working the 10.12 to Manchester Airport. I hope that any passengers travelling to the Airport on this day did not miss their flights as the train was cancelled from Piccadilly.

91118, GR 10.30 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (1E11), Edinburgh Waverley station
91118 waits at the rear of the 10.30 to London King's Cross. I will miss these fine an powerfill electric locomotives when they are replaced in three of four years time by the new IETs that are to be introduced. It's a shame that the new trains have been designed and are being built abroad (initially at first until production moves to the UK under licence) unlike the class 91s that were built by BREL at Crewe in the late 1980s.
