350106, LM 08.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1W05), Birmingham New Street station
Having arrived into the depths of New Street station, 350106's passengers alight. My wife, son and I had taken this train, the 08.49 Euston to Birmingham, from Northampton.

323222, LM 10.31 Walsall-Wolverhampton (2W20), Birmingham New Street station
323222 waits in the gloom of Birmingham New Street station to work the cross-Birmingham 2W20 10.31 Walsall to Wolverhampton service. Notice the guard engrossed in his newspaper (or his 'phone?) sitting in the rear cab of the unit.

43285, XC 11.11 Leeds-Plymouth (1V54), Birmingham New Street station
43285 leads the Cross Country 11.11 Leeds to Plymouth into Birmingham New Street station. This HST power car was built in 1978 and then entered use on the Eastern Region as part of set 254015. In 2008 it was renumbered 43285 and is now in use with Cross Country. I like this livery, it maintains a relatively modern look for these veterans of the network.

323212, LM 12.50 Wolverhampton-Walsall (2A27), Birmingham New Street station
I travelled to Bescot Stadium in this unit, 323212, forming the 12.50 Wolverhampton to Walsall. It is seen here having arrived into New Street station. Built between 1992 and 1996, these class 323s are scheduled for replacement in the next few years having done stirling service all over the West Midlands.

66949, stabled, Bescot yard
Not a great picture, taken from the train window, but one that shows the shocking state that Bescot yard is in. Through the winter undergrowth, Colas branded 66949 'Wylam Dilly' is seen stabled in the yard. The locomotive is named after the second oldest surviving example of its earliest relations. Wylam Dilly was designed by William Hedley and Timothy Hackworth in 1813 to work in Wylam colliery, west of Newcastle upon Tyne

60063, stabled, Bescot Yard
Another mediocre picture taken through the train window as it passed through Bescot yard. It shows 60063 at the head of a stabled tanker train. As a young spotter in the 1970s I would often wish that our car would get a puncture as we travelled along the elevated section of the M6 that overlooked the yard so that I could get the numbers of the many stabled locomotives. The situation today is not so exciting with many fewer loco. on-shed but it remains a busy West Midlands hub of railway activity.

08709 & 08580, stored, Bescot Yard
Two very sad looking shunters sit stored and out of use in Bescot yard directly behind the station. 08709 is a 1960 built machine that was withdrawn in 2011. It is clear to see that its coupling rods have been removed either for use on another shunter or perhaps for ease of movement. Behind it is 08580, also withdrawn in 2011 but a slightly earlier build, 1959.

66079, 11.33 Halewood-Southampton Eastern Docks (6O42), Bescot Stadium station
Tens of thousands of pounds worth of Range Rovers for export pass through Bescot Stadium station behind EWS 66079 'James Nightall G.C.' leading the 11.33 Halewood to Southampton Docks. James Nightall was the fireman on the ammunition train that he saved, along with the driver Ben Gimbert, from explosion, bar one truck, just outside Soham in Cambridgeshire in 1944. Whilst Nightall died, his driver Ben Gimbert survived with terrible injuries.

67026, stabled, Bescot Yard
67026 'Diamond Jubilee' stands stabled in Bescot yard. 67026 was named in a ceremony at Manchester Victoria in March 2012 to commemorate its work with the Royal Train. Its livery is a one-off with no other members of the class looking quite like it!

0010.-66148,-ballast-train,-Bescot-Yard
With the M6 in the background, 66148 sits at the back of an infrastructure train composed of a rake of ballast wagons. I suspect that this train would head off later in the afternoon or during the coming Saturday night ready to wherever it was needed to support the work of the track workers. Notice the unidentified class 37 lurking behind the train.
08888 & 66042, stabled, Bescot Yard
Shunter, 08888 looks sorry for itself in Bescot Yard. According to data on the internet, it is still operational and not withdrawn. It's EWS livery looks very faded, not like 66042 behind it stabled on one of the shed roads.

170503, LM 13.42 Birmingham New Street-Walsall (2A87), Bescot Stadium station
London Midland's 13.42 Birmingham New Street to Walsall 2A87 service arrives into Bescot Stadium station formed of 170503. Behind the fence on the platform is a stored shunter 08580 that looked very sorry for itself.

66148, ballast train, Bescot Yard
66148 stands at the rear of an infrastructure train in Bescot Yard taken from the platform of Bescot Stadium station. The station takes its name from the nearby Banks's Stadium that is the home to Walsall FC.

323212, LM 14.01 Walsall-Wolverhampton (2W34), Bescot Stadium station
323212 returns to Bescot Stadium station with the 14.01 Walsall to Wolverhampton. I came out from New Street earlier in the afternoon on this unit and I am about to return on it again! Bescot Stadium is a pretty desolate station with very basic facilities just south of Walsall.

Aston Signalling Centre signal box (ex Vauxhall Shunt Frame) (BR, 1957)
This is one box that I will probably not be able to get a better picture of than this! It is high up on an embankment in a pretty impossible spot to get access to. Built by British Railways in 1957 and named Vauxhall Shunt Frame it was renamed to Aston Signalling Centre in 1992 when half the first floor was divided off and a panel was installed to control the Lichfield line. The original 1957 20-lever frame is allegedly still in place. The box can be seen from trains as they enter New Street from the Coventry direction by looking north across the Landor Street Freightliner terminal.

Further to my comments above, I did manage to revisit the signal box and get another picture, as to whether it is a better one I will let you decide, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/v/photos/21936chg/27364402804/aston-signalling-centre-signal-box

158822, AW 11.30 Aberystwyth & Pwllheli-Birmingham International (1G35), Birmingham New Street station
158822 laves Birmingham New Street station entering New Street South tunnel embarking on the final stretch of its journey as the 11.30 from Aberystwyth and Pwllheli to Birmingham International. Although it cannot be seen in this image, this train is composed of two units that come together at Machynlleth to work forward. This must be a fascinating journey to make by train and one that I have on my 'must do' list.

323202, LM 14.39 Birmingham New Street-Birmingham International (2I17), Birmingham New Street station
A local service sits under the vast structure of New Street station. The 14.39 New Street to Birmingham International 'all stations' service is formed by 323202. At the time this picture was taken, the platforms were nearing the completion of a protracted re-build to improve the ambience. However, there is only so much can be done to a subterranean station in order to make it more pleasant!

390005, VT 14.50 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1B27), Birmingham New Street station
Five minutes prior to departure, 390005 'City of Wolverhampton' waits in the gloom of Birmingham New Street to depart with the 14.50 to Euston. This 112 mile journey takes about an hour and a quarter, a time that will be cut to about 45 minutes when (if?) HS2 is completed.
