A work trip to Bolton to collect a car for a customer. Following a trip courtesy of London Midland, Virgin and Northern Trains I had a delightful drive back in a Ford Fiesta!

350109, LM 08.33 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1W06), Northampton station
It just does not seem right when going north to somewhere such as Bolton, that I go south from Northampton! However, the most cost effective and quickest way to do the journey is to go south to Milton Keynes to then go north again. 350109 waits at Northampton station forming the 08.33 Birmingham New Street to Euston that I took as far as Milton Keynes.

377701, SN 10.13 Milton Keynes Central-East Croydon-(2O31), Milton Keynes Central station
Southern's 377701 waits at Milton Keynes with the 10.13 Milton Keynes Central to East Croydon. I find it slightly incongruous to see a train associated with the south of London as far north as Milton Keynes.

390011, VT 08.15 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A12), Milton Keynes Central station
390011 'City of Lichfield' slows for its stop at Milton Keynes. It is forming the 1A12 08.15 Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston. As can be seen in this image, it was a particularly dingy winter's day, one that I find utterly depressing making me yearn for the arrival of spring.

350250, LM 09.24 London Euston-Milton Keynes Central (2K29) & 350119, LM 07.55 Crewe-London Euston (1U22), Milton Keynes Central station
A passing of London Midland trains at Milton Keynes station. To the left, 350250 arrives with the 09.24 from London Euston that will terminate. The the right, 350119 leaves after its stop at the station working the 'fast' 1U22 07.55 Crewe to London Euston.

350369, LM 08.54 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (2Y02), Milton Keyes Central station
350369 leaves platform 1 at Milton Keynes forming the 2Y02 08.54 Birmingham New Street to Euston. As it's designated as a '2' service indicates that its one of the slower stopper workings, ones that my wife and I try to avoid using for our frequent trips to London.

66418, 05.01 Trafford Park-Felixstowe North (4L97), Milton Keynes Central station
66418 passes through Milton keynes station with the 4L97 05.01 Trafford Park to Felixstowe Freightliner working. The revised Freightliner livery as applied here with its much increased use of yellow on the front ends certainly lifts these locos. out of the drab scenery on a dull day such as this.

Class 390, 10.07 London Euston-Liverpool Lime Street (1F14), Milton Keynes Central station
The footbridge that spans the lines at Milton Keynes station has a series of these mysterious port holes that give tantalising views of the running lines and platforms below. Here, a class 390 heads north through the station with the 10.07 Euston to Liverpool Lime Street.

Class 390, VT 07.46 Carlisle-London Euston (1M07) & 350250, LM 09.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1Y22), Milton Keynes Central station
As this class 390 Pendolino was not stopping at Milton Keynes it was passing through at full line speed this made it impossible to identify its number. It was working the 1M07 07.46 Carlisle to Euston. To its right, 350250 is waiting to leave forming the 1Y22 09.14 Birmingham New Street to Euston.

Class 221, VT 10.10 London Euston-Chester (1D84), Milton Keynes Central station
A class 221 slows for its Milton Keynes stop with the 1D84 10.10 Euston to Chester. With their numbers so low down on a cowling it is very difficult to identify the set numbers of these Voyagers. This is unlike their class 222 Meridian cousins that have their numbers emblazoned across the nose right where the Virgin badge is affixed on these Voyagers.

350115, VT 09.15 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A17), Milton Keynes Central station
390115 slows for its stop at Milton Keynes with the 1A17 09.15 Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston. As it was stopping, it was easy to identify its number and use a reasonably slow shutter speed with a sensible ISO on the camera with little subsequent digital noise.

390020, VT 10.20 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H18), Milton Keynes Central station
For the second leg of my journey to Bolton, I took the 10.20 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly from Milton Keynes. 390020 arrives into the station ready to whisk me northwards. Despite their weaknesses, not least are their stinking toilets, something that still has still not been sorted out some sixteen years after their introduction, they do a fairly efficient job of getting passengers about.

350401, TP 09.06 Glasgow Central 10.55 Windermere-Manchester Airport (1M94), Manchester Piccadilly station
On arrival at Manchester, the cloudy and dull conditions further south had given way to some winter sunshine. With he grand arches of Piccadilly station in the background, 350401 and another unidentified unit around the corners, pause with the Trans Pennine 09.06 Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport. This train had also joined with the 10.55 from Windermere but I am not sure where this happened, can anybody advise?

150148, NT 10.59 Chester-Manchester Piccadilly (2H31), Manchester Piccadilly station
150148 arrives at Manchester Piccadilly forming the 10.59 from Chester. I am not sure what route this service took, but I suspect that it went via Delamere, Knutsford and Stockport.

175114, AW 12.30 Manchester Piccadilly-Milford Haven (1V42) & 142146, NT 12.03 New Mills Central-Manchester Piccadilly (2S29), Manchester Piccadilly station
Ariva Trains Wales' 175114 starts its marathon journey from Manchester Piccadilly forming the 1V42 12.30 to Milford Haven. This 233 mile journey takes in a very interesting route passing through some amazingly diverse landscapes from the suburbs of Manchester, the Welsh Marches, the steel works of Port talbot to the stunning Towy Estuary. Meanwhile, 142146 arrives with the 12.03 from New Mills Central - a far more mundane service!

390103, VT 12.35 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A34), Manchester Piccadilly station
A side profile view of 390103 'Virgin Hero' waits at Manchester Piccadilly to leave with the 1A34 12.35 to London Euston. Notice that this particular Pendolino carries a poppy and is dedicated to The Royal British Legion. This is the 'as-built' livery that the class 390s have worn since their introduction in 2002.

156420, NT 11.23 Southport-Manchester Airport (2A10), Manchester Piccadilly station
A crew change is taking place at Manchester Piccadilly as the driver steps down from 156420. The service has paused with the 11.23 Southport to Manchester Airport working.

158854, EM 07.57 Norwich-Liverpool Lime Street (1R70), Manchester Piccadilly station
EMT's 158884 arrives for its stop at Manchester Piccadilly station with the 07.57 Norwich to Liverpool Lime Street. This 1R70 working is a 237 miles end to end journey that crosses the country from east to west. These services used to be formed of a good solid set of stock hauled by a locomotive up front, often a class 31. The 158s are not in quite the same league as that but are at least of the modern day equivalents they are they are among the more comfortable.

158846 & 158864, EM 11.52 Liverpool Lime Street-Norwich (1L10), Manchester Piccadilly station
A well used spot by photographers is at the end of Manchester Piccadilly's platforms 13 and 14 looking west. From that vantage point, 158846 and 158864 arrive with the 11.52 Liverpool Lime Street to Norwich 1L10 working. With all the developments going on in Manchester, it is sometimes hard to remember it as the 'dirty northern town', as painted by its favourite son L S Lowry, that it once was.

156425, NT 12.29 Manchester Airport-Blackpool North (1N62), Manchester Piccadilly station
My third train of the day from Manchester Piccadilly to Bolton. 156425 arrives at platform 14 with the 12.29 Manchester Airport to Blackpool North. This service will go over to electric power when (if ever?) the long awaited north western electrification programme is completed. During my journey, I saw limited evidence of pilings and masts in place northwards from Windsor Bridge Junction so diesel power will reign for a fair while to come.

142034, NT 12.23 Southport-Manchester Airport (2A12), Bolton station
With no evidence of the pending electrification at Bolton, 142034 pauses at the station with the 12.23 Southport to Manchester Airport. It will not be long before these second generation DMUs will be confined to history to the applause of those travellers in the north west who use them day in, day out! I hope that their electric replacements come up to expectations.

142034, NT 12.23 Southport-Manchester Airport (2A12), Bolton station
Bolton station is a shadow of its former self with just the three through lines now. However, look at the extensive work taking place on the overbridge carrying Orlando Road over the railway. The bridge is being modified so it can accept the electrification wires. 142034 leaves the station with the 2A12 12.23 Southport to Manchester Airport service.

156452, NT 13.03 Manchester VIctoria-Clitheroe (2N52), Bolton station
A busy scene at Bolton station as 156452 waits at platform one with the 13.03 Manchester Victoria to Clitheroe working. Notice the ancient1970s BR era buffet sign still on the wall of the station building.

Tickets, Northampton-Bolton
My split-tickets for the off-peak journey from Northampton to Bolton. £34 is not too bad, but what do I care as it was paid for by work!
