2. The return leg-PM

In the evening I went out again to see the train return in my Combo van to save some fuel costs! This time, I saw it on the four track section of the ECML just south of Biggleswade. Unfortunately, it was on the down slow and not exactly being worked very hard.

91115, GR 17.03 London Kings Cross-Leeds (1D23, RT), Langford TL191396
91115 'Blaydon Races' heads north with the 17.03 King's Cross to Leeds 1D23 working. It is on the down fast passing Langford just south of Biggleswade in Bedfordshire. The weather had not improved from earlier in the day, turning into a dull and disappointing evening.

I am writing to inform you that Ms. Susan Garcia is moving into 62 Chaucer Street, Northampton, NN2 7HN on 1Oth August. She is responsible for all bills from that date. Any charges before then should be billed to me Mrs C Randall, 9 The Grove, Roade, Northampton, NN7 2PB.

43044, GR 17.10 London Kings Cross-Hull (1H10, 3L), Langford TL191396
On hire from East Midlands Trains making a change from the usual fare on the ECML, 43044 passes Langford working the 1H10 17.10 King's Cross to Hull. If I was making the journey to Hull, I would sooner travel in the luxury of a Mk.III rather than one of Hull Trains' class 180s. 43044 was a Western Region power car that was part of set 253022.

387125, GE 17.16 Peterborough-London Kings Cross (1P59, 3L), Langford TL191396
387125 on the up slow past Langford in Bedfordshire working the 17.16 Peterborough to King's Cross. I chose this spot for the return Hull and Leeds Executive special as I figured nobody else would be present; I was right! The bridge in the background carries a footpath over the line but pictures from it are impossible because of corrugated wire covering the sides and top.

365541 & 365529, GN, 17.22 London Kings Cross-Peterborough (1P64, 1L), Langford TL191396
The 17.22 King's Cross to Peterborough local 'stopper' passes near to the village of Langford between Arlesey and Biggleswade. 365541 and 365529 are working the train. Their future is uncertain as new stock is introduced, it is likely that some will be cascaded but ultimately, some may be withdrawn and scrapped?

365529 & 365541, GN, 17.22 London Kings Cross-Peterborough (1P64, 1L) & 82213, GR 16.05 Leeds-London Kings Cross (1A40, 1L), Langford TL191396
As 365529 and 365541 head north with the 17.22 King's Cross to Peterborough whilst 82213 speeds south leading the 1A40 16.05 Leeds to King's Cross. The scene is recorded at Langford on the southern WCML.

82213, GR 16.05 Leeds-London Kings Cross (1A40, 1L), Langford TL191396
82213 leads the 16.05 Leeds to London King's Cross (1A40). These DVTs, with a set of Mk. IV coaches and an immensely powerful class 91 remain a fast and comfortable way to travel up and down the ECML. With the imminent arrival of the IETs next year, things are set to change; for the better, we'll see?

66023, 12.54 Cottam Power Station-Acton (6E46), Langford TL191396
66023 ambles along the up slow at Langford in Bedfordshire with the 12.54 Cottam power station to Acton empty wagons. 66023 is still in its EWS livery but all the decals and vinyls have been removed and a single DB logo applied to the front. I wonder how long it will be before a complete makeover takes place?

43307 & 43319, 17.35 London Kings Cross-Harrogate (1D24, 28L, cancelled from Leeds), Langford TL191396
With some old line side fencing in the foreground, 43307 leads with 43319 at the rear working the 17.35 King's Cross to Harrogate past Langford just north of Arlesey. The VTEC livery of these HST certainly brightens up the dullness of the evening! This train ran into difficulties further north, after arrival into Leeds 28 minutes late, it was cancelled so passengers for Harrogate may have suffered the ignominy of travelling the final part of their journey in a Pacer perhaps?

180110, HT 17.48 London Kings Cross-Beverley (1H06, 13L), Langford TL191396
Hull Trains' 180110 heads north past Langford south of Biggleswade forming the 17.48 London KIng's Cross to Beverley. This train works into Hull and then reverses back out and over West Parade Junction to head north the short distance to Beverley.

Class 180, GC 15.21Bradford Interchange-London Kings Cross (1A67, RT), Langford TL191396
An unidentified Grand Central class 180 heads south past Langford with the 15.21 Bradford Interchange to King's Cross. The Grand Central livery is certainly different, and whilst it looks okay on the class 180s I am not at all sure it suits their HSTs?

91128, GR 18.03 London Kings Cross-Leeds (1D26, 5L), Langford TL191396
91128 'InterCity 50' hauls the evening 18.08 King's Cross to Leeds working past Langford in Bedfordshire. On this section of the ECML the quadruple track is straight making it ideal for fast expresses now an in the past. These class 91s were dubbed the "InterCity 225s" when they were being developed and first introduced. This related to their 140mph design speed. In practice, they have operated at 125mph and given good service over the last thirty years.

387126, GE 17.34 London Kings Cross-Peterborough (1P30, 3L), Langford TL191396
387126 works the 17.34 King's Cross to Peterborough on the down slow past Langford in Bedfordshire. I like the old and new in this picture. The weather beaten fence posts contrast with the white and green ex. Southern class 387.

D9009, return leg of The Leeds & Hull-Executive, 17.55 London Kings Cross-Willington (Via Leeds) (1Z12), Langford TL191396
As usual on quadruple track, a special is usually pathed on the slow lines so as to keep it out the way of faster traffic. However, with a Deltic, they are pretty capable of keeping up a consistent and fast pace but the signallers in control would probably be too young to remember this! D9009 'Alycidon' is stuck behind a Great Northern stopper service as it approaches Langford in Bedfordshire. It was leading the return Leeds and Hull Executive from King's Cross that, ultimately, would end up at Willington in Derbyshire. The Deltic in rail blue with a matching set of period stock looks and is absolutely right for this line, it's just a shame it was on the slow!

43206, GR 18.08 London Kings Cross-Lincoln (1B90, 4L), Langford TL191396
43206 heads north leading the 18.08 King's Cross to Lincoln HST. This service travels fast to Newark then via the Midland route through Swinderby to Lincoln. 43206 still looks very smart in its VTEC livery despite being a very early power car being one power car of set 253003 delivered new to the Western Region in 1976.
