An evening trip to Roade Cutting to see the newly restored Flying Scotsman running light engine to Southall. I chose a spot that was a fair walk off the beaten track even sacrificing the sun for shade. But, even so, there were still about 10 people at this remote spot to take in the spectacle!

350241, LM 15.54 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (2Y16, RT), Roade Cutting
I have to admit that I got my sums wrong here! I figured that the sun would still be high enough to be in the cutting but I was but by about half an hour! 350241 emerges from under the Roade Cutting 'bird cage' as it is referred to. The Desiro is working the 2Y16 15.54 Birmingham new Street to London Euston.

325006, 16.22 Willesden-Sheildmuir (1S96), Roade Cutting
A going away shot of the daily 16.22 Willesden to Sheildmuir postal train with 325006 on the back as it is about to enter the 'birdcage' in Roade Cutting. This structure was built to support the walls of the cutting as it was at this point there was huge collapse in 1890. The steel structure had to be raised in the early 1960s to facilitate the electrification of the line.

Class 221, VT 15.24 Shrewsbury-London Euston (1B68, 2L), Roade Cutting
A pair of unidentified class 221s pass through Roade Cutting forming the 15.24 Shrewsbury to London Euston working. It is impossible to identify unit numbers of these Voyagers, unlike the Pendolinos that have the end of a carriage number applied to the roof on the pantograph housing. From this number, the set number can easily be identified.

66065, 13.17 Trafford Park-London Gateway (4L56), Roade Cutting
66066 labours up the gradient from Northampton and through Roade Cutting leading the 13.17 Trafford Park to London Gateway Freightliner working. The camera was really beginning to struggle with the extreme contrast between the strong April late afternoon sunshine and the darkness of the cutting.

66525 & 66547, 15.11 Bescot-Bletchley (6Y59), Roade Cutting
66525 leads the 15.11 Bescot to Bletchley 6Y59 engineers' train consisting of ten full ballast hoppers. 66547 is on the rear and on this occasion was not under power so the whole train was moving sedately through Roade Cutting with 66525 doing all the work.

66547 & 66525, 15.11 Bescot-Bletchley (6Y59), Roade Cutting
66547 is dead in tow at the rear of the 15.11 Bescot to Bletchley ballast train giving no help to 66525 up at the front. The engineers' train is seen passing trough Roade Cutting nearing the end of its journey from the West Midlands.

60103, 08.10 Keighley-Southall (5Z72), Roade Cutting
I deliberately chose this location at the far northern end of Roade Cutting as it is a remote spot nowhere near any roads and one that necessitates a good walk across the fields thinking nobody else would be there.....wrong! There were about six or seven 'normals' at this spot to witness 60103 'Flying Scotsman' pass working the 08.10 Keighley to Southall LE (with a support coach) movement. The 'normals' were disappointed as they thought it was going to be a full sized train! This was my first picture of the newly restored 'Scotsman' that headed to west London and then on to East Grinstead later that night for a guest appearance on the Bluebell Line.
