Travelling on Sunday morning to Liverpool from Northampton was bit slow due to some poor connections, late running services and Lime Street being closed with all trains terminating at Liverpool South Parkway and a consequential transfer to Merseyrail services. Here, we were herded about by their staff like we were animals in a pen; not nice.

350234 & 350101, 09.05 Northampton Riverside-Northampton ECS (5N02), Northampton station
350234 and 350 101 drift into Northampton station having made the short reverse journey from the Riverside Sidings, that are directly behind me, as the ECS for the first up working of the morning to London Euston.

350258, LN 09.40 Northampton-Crewe (1U27, 1E), Northampton station
350258 arrives into platform 2 at Northampton station with the ECS that will form the 09.40 working to Crewe. My wife, son and I travelled on this train as far as Nuneaton for a change to a Virgin service to Liverpool that did not go to plan.

67023, 09.00 Derby RTC-Crewe Basford Hall, Nuneaton station
Due to the cancellation of our train from Nuneaton to Liverpool, we had an extended wait of about fifty minutes. Whilst my wife and son sat in the buffet I went on the wander camera in hand. As it was a Sunday morning, things were a bit quiet but I did capture Colas livered 67023 passing through light engine as the 09.00 Derby RTC to Crewe Basford Hall. A bit of a dull and miserable morning meant that the iso on the camera had to be ramped up a bit!
221126, XC diverted 10.14 Birmingham New Street-Edinburgh (1S41, RT), Nuneaton station
Due to engineering works on the Trent Valley line near to Burton-on-Trent services were being diverted south to Nuneaton, across to Leicester and then up the MML to Derby. Consequently, there was the unusual spectacle of Cross Country trains passing through Nuneaton. Here, 221126 has just passed through the station working the 10.14 from Birmingham New Street to Edinburgh. Despite the diversion, it still managed to arrive on-time in the Scottish capital.

170103, XC 10.22 Leicester-Birmingham New Street (1P00, RT), Nuneaton station
170103 pauses at Nuneaton station with the Cross Country 10.22 Leicester to Birmingham New Street working. Despite it being a Sunday morning, this train was well loaded with a good number of passengers getting on the service at Nuneaton.

Frontage, Nuneaton station
In the rankings of station architecture I doubt if Nuneaton would win any prizes? However, like all railway structures it has its place in history. There has been a station on this site since the LNWR opened the first one in 1847. However, by the start of the twentieth century this had proved to be inadequate so was rebuilt for the second time in 1915. This building was designed by the notable architect Reginald Wynn Owen who did a lot of work for the LNWR; he was obviously having an off day when it came to Nuneaton!

390121, VT 09.33 Liverpool South Parkway-London Euston (1A09, 5E), Nuneaton station
Virgin Trains 390121 'Virgin Dream' waits to get the 09.33 Liverpool South Parkway to London Euston away from Nuneaton station. This train (and all others on this particular Sunday) were terminating and starting from Liverpool South Parkway rather than Lime Street because of the latter's protracted rebuilding.

390122, VT 09.14 London Euston-Liverpool South Parkway (1F11, 29L), Nuneaton station
My wife and son wait as 390122 'Penny the Pendolino' comes to a halt at Nuneaton station. We would all then board this service, the 09.14 London Euston to Liverpool South Parkway, and go all the way for our short break in Liverpool. This train arrived 29 minutes late into South Parkway station where we had to experience the ignominy of being herded by Merseyrail staff on to one of their units for the trip to Liverpool Central.

Class 66s, stabled, Crewe Basford Hall Yard
Taken from our Pendolino as we slowed for the stop at Crewe, we see a number of class 66s stabled in the confines of the expansive Basford Hall yard. A shame that the locomotives are not any nearer so that numbers could be collected.

68018, stabled, Crewe LNWR
As we slowed for the stop at Crewe station 68018 'Vigilant' sits stabled at the LNWR yard. This is clearly a DRS locomotive with its distinctive compass logo as is the former 1974 Derby built BR Mk2 BSO now a DBSO 9709 that is still in use, mainly on the Cumbrian Coast.

345030, stabled, Crewe LNWR
Tucked up against the wall of LNWR's depot is one of Crossrail's new class 345s. This one, 3450030, looks smart in its new livery, I wonder how long it will stay like this crossing underneath London as will do thousands of times when Crossrail eventually opens.

508125 & class 507, 12.55 Liverpool South Parkway-Ormskirk (2O28, 1L), Liverpool South Parkway station
A grab shot to maintain the tradition that I always photograph every train that I travel on! After being herded on to this train by Merseyrail staff we then travelled on it to Liverpool Central in order to complete our journey. 508125 and a class 507 cousin wait at Liverpool South Parkway station with the 12.55 to Ormskirk.
Tickets, Northampton-Liverpool Lime Street
For three of us, just under £27 was cheap to get us to Liverpool, from Northampton. But, the journey was slow, fraught with problems and we were treated badly by Merseyrail staff on arrival in Liverpool.
