Whilst undertaking a spot of weekend house-sitting at my mum and her partner's house in Dorset we took a trip to Salisbury by train from Gillingham. I was permitted an hour or so on the station whist my wife and son explored the retail opportunities on offer in Salisbury!

Gillingham signal box (BR, 1957)
The austere and functional signal box at Gillingham (Dorset) is seen from the platform end. The box was built by British Railways in 1957 replacing a L&SWR structure. I must have stood in a nearly identical position back in 1981 when I visited the station as a schoolboy, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30033391730/gillingham-signal-box-br-1957

159108 & 159103, SW 09.26 Exeter St. David's-London Waterloo (1L26), Gillingham station
A busy scene at Gillingham (Dorset) station on a Saturday morning.159108. leads 159103 into the station working the 09.26 Exeter St. David's to Waterloo service. My wife, son and I took this train to Salisbury for a day out. I have travelled very little on the former L&SWR route, indeed, I believe that I have never travelled the lines west of Gillingham towards Exeter; something that needs rectifying.

Frontage, Salisbury station
The rather grand frontage of Salisbury station dates from 1901 being a later replacement for the smaller station that is out of sight behind the double-decker bus to the right of the image. It has changed very little from when I took a very similar image back in 1981 but the taxis on view have, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30035687493/frontage-salisbury-station

Two SWT units stand at Salisbury platform six. Directly in front of the camera is 159105 will work the 14.47 service to London Waterloo. However, 159888 will first work the 2R54 14.56 stopper to Cahndler's Ford. I took a similar image during my 1981 visit to Salisbury with the signalling vying for interest as well as the motive power, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30035687496/x1130-stabled-salisbury-station-thumper

159105, SW 14.47 Salisbury-London Waterloo (1L50), Salisbury station
The 1L50 14.47 Salisbury to London Waterloo South West Trains' service will depart in about fifteen minutes from platform six. Salisbury is a busy station with services coming from all directions. Whilst the main operator is South West Trains, First Great Western also run trains through the station between Portsmouth and Bristol

158953, GW 13.23 Portsmouth Harbour-Bristol Parkway (1F21), Salisbury station
FGW's 159953 arrives at Salisbury station working the 13.23 Portsmouth Harbour to Bristol Parkway service. The rather tatty front end of the Class 158 is also adorned with a rather sad-looking pheasant that didn't quite make it across the track!

159103, SW 13.20 London Waterloo-Exeter St. David's (1E20), Salisbury station
The 13.20 Waterloo to Exterter St. David's service sweeps into Salisbury station worked by 159103. These units are comfortable and relatively fast and have done good work on the former L&SWR mainline route. However, they are not really a substitute for a locomotive hauled set of proper stock are they really, see... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30033391740/x50011-11-10-london-waterloo-exeter

66549, 12.45 Theale Lafarge-Wool Sidings (6O49), Salisbury station
I was pleased to capture this relatively new freight flow at Salisbury. The 6O49 Theale Lafarge to Wool sidings conveys empty HIA ninety-tone aggregate wagons to collect sand to be then taken back to Theale. With some very rusty window surrounds (a common Class 66 malaise) 66549 brings the train into Salisbury for a crew change.

66549, 12.45 Theale Lafarge-Wool Sidings (6O49), Salisbury station
With a cre change having taken place on the platform 66549 gets the 6O49 12.45 Theale Lafarge to Wool Sidings empty snad train under way. This is a popular working in the south that is often devoid of freight apart from Freightliner workings to and from Southampton. Notice the large former water tower in the background.

158881 & 158882, ECS shunting into platform 5, Salisbury station
Having just arrived with a service from Waterloo and terminated consecutively numbered 158881 and 158882 move out of the station and cross over from the down to the up line. The pair of units will then run back into the station and prepare for their next service.

159102, stabled, Salisbury Train Care Depot
The substantial nine-road Salisbury Train Care Depot is seen from the platform end. Whilst a 15X unit hides in the darkness of the shed 159102 stands outside in the afternoon sunshine. The depot opened in 1992 on the site of the former 1856 Great Western Railway station and its own small shed that opened in 1856 closing at the very start of the twntieth centuary.

159005, SW 13.26 Exeter St. David's-London Waterloo (1L82), Salisbury station
159005 and a fellow class member pause at Salisbury station working the 13.26 Exeter St. David's to London Waterloo service. The first part of this journey from the south-west is relatively slow on large sections of singled track but from Salisbury onwards, the average speed picks up with fewer stops.

159015, & Class 159s, Salisbury Train Care Depot
A lineup of South West Trains' finest stand idle in Salisbury depot seen from the station. Nearest the camera, and the only one identifiable, is 159015. The depot opened in 1992 and is now the home to the entire fleet Class 158 and 159 units operated by SWT.

FGW's 158955 approaches Salisbury station working the 14.02 Bristol Parkway to Portsmouth Harbour service. This severe front-end view reveals the driver taking a swig of his chosen refreshment from what appears to be an insulated mug.

The 1F24 14.24 Portsmouth Harbour to Bristol Parkway FGW service stands at Salisbury station. These units are perfectly capable working these inter-regional services replacing a rag-bag mixture of locomotive-hauled services in the late 1980s.

159019, SW 14.20 London Waterloo-Exeter St. David's (1L41), Salisbury station
159019 and another unit arrive at Salisbury station working the 14.20 Waterloo to Exeter service. My wife, son and I travelled on this train as far as Gillingham (Dorset) concluding our short trip to Salisbury.

Tisbury signal box (BR, 1958)
Taken right into the afternoon sunshine Tisbury signal box is seen from my position jumping on to the platform during our stop at the station. In a typically wasteful manner fitting to British Railways of that era, the box was closed way back in 1967 having only been in operational use for nine years. The closure came about when they made the decision to massively rationalise the route between Wilton Junction (Salisbury) and Exeter with it coming very close to complete closure. Talk today is that it is to be invested in and even re-doubled as traffic increases again.

159020 & 159019, SW 14.20 London Waterloo-Exeter St. David's (1L41), Gillingham station
Having alighted from the 14.20 Waterloo to Exeter St. David's service at Gillingham (Dorset) I turned my camera into the afternoon light to picture its departure having just passed the 1957 built British Railways signal box. My wife, son and I had travelled aboard 159020 and 159019 from Salisbury.
