The journey home itself was as routine as ever but an unusual event was observed at Euston station prior to our departure.

802101, 14.06 London Euston-North Pole Depot (5Q85, 4E), London Euston station
Paddington or Euston? Class 800 IETs are not commonly seen away from their GWR territory and in what I believe to be a first, an example of the class is seen in Euston station undergoing various tests and checks. Overseen by a team from GWR 802101 'Nancy Astor' waits at platform twelve to depart as the 14.06 to North Pole depot via reversals at Willesden and Kensington Olympia. This very strange move is to test if the IETs can be used next Christmas during the extended closure of the GWML to operate services in and out of Euston.

This photograph was printed in Rail issue 1006 with my accompanying notes.

802101, 14.06 London Euston-North Pole Depot (5Q85, 4E), London Euston station
Not a sight seen very often; a GWR IET pokes its nose out from under the roof of London Euston station! 805101 'Nancy Astor' will work the 5Q85 14.06 Euston to North Pole Depot, one of a number of runs throughout the week to test if the bi-mode IETs can be utilised to operate some GWR services next Christmas during the eighteen-day closure of the GWML into Paddington. Staff told me that they had been given this set for the week in order to undertake various logistical and gauging tests and that so-far, things had gone well. They had also run into Waterloo to see if this station could be used too.

390126, VT 06.52 Edinburgh Waverley-London Euston (9M50, 1L), 805006, 14.03 London Euston Edge Hill Depot (5Q92, RT) & 802101 , 14.06 London Euston-North Pole Depot (5Q85, 4E), London Euston station
An unusual lineup at Euston station sees the more usual Pendolino at the far end. 390126 has just arrived having worked the 06.52 from Edinburgh Waverley. The second closest to the camera is one of the new and unbranded bi-mode Class 805s undergoing yet another mileage accumulation and driver training run. 805006 will work the 5Q52 14.03 train to Edge Hill depot in Liverpool. Lastly, in the foreground is an interloper from western lines. 802101 'Nancy Astor' will leave at 14.06 as the 5Q85 to North Pole Depot. As the crow flies it is not very far and easily done in half an hour or so by public transport or bike but by rail considerably longer via two reversals, one at Willesden Yard and another at Kensington Olympia. This rather convoluted route could see these trains taking next Christmas offering a partial service to stations west during the lengthy closure of the GWML out of Paddington.

350118, LN 13.23 London Euston-Birmingham new Street (1Y39, 2L), London Euston station
Our train back from London to Northampton waits in the gloominess of Euston station. My wife and I travelled aboard the 1Y39 13.23 service to Birmingham New Street worked by 350118. It was pleasing that there was a full ticket inspection during the journey undertaken by a very professional guard who also made concise and useful announcements and not a 'station stop' to be heard; this makes a pleasant and reassuring change from the usual London Northwestern experience!

86259, stabled, Wembley Yard
After many years of leading The Cumbrian Mountain/Coast express charters for West Coast Railways, it appears that the customary light engine move on the Sunday after the charter that saw 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' return to Rugby for stabling has come to an end. This season the locomotive appears to be resting over in Wembley yard which logistically seems to make much more sense.

Class 66, 14.21 Wembley Yard-Merehead Quarry (7V50, 6L), 59203, stabled & 321309, stored, Wembley Yard
Unfortunately, despite many an effort the Freighliner Class 66 at the head of the 7V50 14,21 to Merehead sseen here sitting in Wembley Yard will remain unidentified! 59203 stabled in the foreground is more easily identified as is stored former Greater Anglia unit 321309 from its side number.

Tickets, London Euston-Northampton
Our single return tickets from Euston to Northampton. As we were using single advanced tickets we had to travel on a specific train that my wife was a little concerned about. It actually made us arrive early at Euston to ensure that we did not miss the requisite train giving us time for a coffee!
