A run out from home to see an HST private charter passing. For a change, it was not the more usual LSL Blue Pullman set but a former East Midlands set powered by two of railadventure's (sic) power cars.

168004, CH 08.15 Birmingham Moor Street-London Marylebone (1H25, 1E), Claydon crossing SP451498
Despite the seemingly bright weather it was, in fact, pouring with rain! The 08.15 Birmingham Moor Street to Marylebone passes near the north Oxfordshire village of Claydon worked by Chiltern turbo unit 168004. There used to be an occupation level crossing at this location, the post of which can be seen to the left, but there is now just a footpath crossing which is busy with dog walkers and rail enthusiasts alike!

221137, XC 06.30 Bournemouth-Manchester Piccadilly (1M26 25L), Claydon crossing SP451498
CrossCountry Voyager 221137 is working hard as it passes north past Claydon between Banbury and Leamington Spa. It is working the 06.30 Bournemouth to Manchester Piccadilly service that was running late at this time, something that it did not recover from all the way to its destination.

168110, CH 08.07 London Marylebone-Birmingham Moor Street (1R14 RT), Claydon crossing SP451498
With the sun just putting in an appearance, but in this instance causing the 08.07 Marylebone to Birmingham Moor Street to be rather backlit, it is captured passing near Claydon worked by 168110. These units remain the mainstay of Chiltern's operations throughout their network with the TOC still persevering with locomotive-hauled trains for some services.

66707, 05.24 Southampton MCT-Doncaster Iport (4E34 RT), Claydon crossing SP451498.
Making for an imposing sight, 66707 'Sir Sam Fay Great Central Railway' leads the 4E34 05.24 Southampton Docks to Doncaster iport past Claydon just south of Fenny Compton. This location is right on the county boundary with me standing on this side of the line, to the east, being in Northamptonshire. However, if I cross the crossing to the west and take a few steps I enter Oxfordshire.

43480 & 43468, outward leg of The Master Cutler, 06.48 Sheffield-London Marylebone (1Z43, 8E), Claydon crossing SP451498
By now running nearly thirty minutes late, the 06.48 Sheffield to Marylebone Master Cutler Retro Railtours' charter is seen passing Claydon between Banbury and Leamington Spa. The stock is composed of a short rake of former East Midlands coaches giving the passengers a sumptuous ride on some well-sprung and large seats in contrast to today's modern-day versions. Meanwhile, the power is supplied by two of RailAdventure's HST power cars with 43480 leading and 43478 on the rear. Despite the late running here on arrival at Marylebone the train was only eight minutes adrift. Passengers could either alight in London for several hours or complete a short out-and-back run to Banbury

168217, CH 08.45 Birmingham Moore Street-London Marylebone (1H27, 2L), Claydon crossing SP451498
With an improving picture, in terms of the weather at least, the 08.45 Birmingham Moore Street to Marylebone Chiltern service passes Claydon worked by 168217. These dramatically silver-painted units are beginning to look a little work-stained now if the front of this one is anything to go by!

HS2 under-construction, looking SE from SP468528
Whilst I am a fan of HS2 and of its now curtailed northern arms, when I see the enormous impact on the landscape needed for its construction I do wince a little. I suppose that the long-term benefits have to be taken into account and hopefully they will trump the shorter-term issues but I am not too sure that local residents will agree. This view is looking southeast from a point where the line will run in a few years near the villages of Upper and Lower Boddington.

HS2 under-construction, looking NW from SP468528
In a few year's time, I would be standing on the trackbed of HS2! This view is looking northwest near the villages of Upper and Lower Boddington in Northamptonshire. The large new bridge constructed in the background will carry a relatively minor road over the line as it heads towards Birmingham. I am not too sure as to how long it will be until trains pass this spot, only time and various governments will tell on that question!
