A pleasant, if a little chilly, trip with Andy to the county of Rutland to see The East Anglian Push-Pull charter composed of LSL's reproduction ScotRail set complete with a DBSO and 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer'. In the afternoon I took a walk around the my home village to coincide with the passage of a couple of freights.

CrossCountry's 170637 passes near the village of Wing working the 07.05 Gloucester to Cambridge service. This location is at a foot crossing deep in the Rutland countryside that seemed a popular route for local dog walkers judging by the number that passed Andy and I whilst we were waiting for the charter.

9707, outward leg of The East Anglian Push-Pull, 07.52 Crewe-Norwich (1Z23, RT), Wing SK896034
Looking superb in its reproduction ScotRail livery DBSO 9707 leads the 07.52 Crewe to Norwich East Anglian Push-Pull charter running as 1Z23. 47712 'Lady Dina Spencer' was providing the power for the train at the rear. The forecast was not particularly good for this day so my initial plan was another spot that would have been poor if the sun had been out. However, as can be seen, some weak sunshine did put in an appearance so Andy and I changed our plans ending up here near the village of Wing just a mile east of Manton Junction.

Evoking an era when the nationalised railways were at their best! Sectorisation brought about ScotRail under the leadership of Chris Green (of the best BR chairman it never had fame) and propelled the railways of Scotland forward. One of their creations was the push-pull rakes of Mark 3 stock with a DBSO and a dedicated 'long range' Class 47 running fast between Glasgow and Edinburgh that all carried the smart livery as seen here. 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' passing near the village of Wing in Rutland propelling the outward leg of The East Anglian Push-Pull charter from Crewe to Norwich.

170109, XC 09.22 Birmingham New Street-Cambridge (1L34, RT), Oakham level crossing
170109 working the 09.22 Birmingham to Cambridge Crosscountry service leaves Oakham station crossing the busy level crossing that blights motorists and other road users in the town. Able-bodied pedestrians fare better as they can use the footbridge that I am standing on to take this photograph. Notice the well-kept and recently repainted 1899 Midland signal box that operates a number of semaphores in the area under absolute block and, of course, the crossing gates.

170108, XC 10.22 Birmingham New Street-Cambridge (1L36, RT), Oakham station
The 10.22 Birmingham New Street to Cambridge service worked by 170108 arrives at Oakham station catching some welcome, if weak, winter sunshine. Notice the home signal with the arm hidden behind a sighting board to the right that controls the up siding. It appears to see regular use as the rail head was shiny and clean.

66715, 11.39 London Gateway-Hans Hall (4M47, 3L), Victoria bridge
Having what must rank as one of the longest names on a locomotive 66715 'Valour. In Memory of all Railway Employees Who Gave Their Lives For Their Country' leads the completely boxless 4M47 11.39 London Gateway to Hams Hall past Victoria bridge between Roade and Ashton. I wonder if ships held up and diverted via the Cape due the awful conflict in the Middle East has led to a lack if freight? The Class 66 has worn its plates for fourteen years since naming as part of the Remembrance commemorations in November 2010.

390044, 10.40 Glasgow Central-London Euston (1M11, RT), Roade Hill
This is a local spot that I have not visited for a number of years. It used to be a go-to spot for afternoon and evening photographs offering unrestricted views of both the up slow and fast lines, for example, https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/24596067204/x88002-class-88-vip-launch-16-40 However, uncontrolled growth of scrub has rendered all but this restricted view completely blocked. 390044 'Royal Scot' passes working the 10.40 Glasgow to Euston service.

66797, 14.39 DIRFT-Dollands Moor (6O67, 2L), A508 bridge
The 14.39 DIRFT (Daventry) to Dollands Moor empty water train passes through Roade led by Beacon liveried and owned but GBRf operated 66797. It was worth the wait on a grey winter's afternoon as this was my first picture of this locomotive that was repatriated from Germany in 2021 where it had been operating as PB 513-09 / 266 036 since 2004.
