A drive out to a delightful two-track section of the southern section of the WCML near Weedon on a cold and frosty winter's morning to photograph the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express 2. With my leg plaster now removed following an operation the return walk along the canal towpath to my chosen spot was a slow and painful affair but was part of my physiotherapy programme!

Class 390, VT 06.35 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston, Whilton Locks SP619640 Just catching some early morning sun as it rises above the eastern horizon an unidentified Class 390 Pendolino passes southwards along the side of the Grand Union Canal near Whilton in Northamptonshire. Above the leading power car of the 06.35 Manchester to Euston service the moon in its third quarter phase can be seen. Class 390, VT 07.30 London Euston-Glasgow Central, Whilton Locks SP619640 The 07.30 Euston to Glasgow Central Anglo-Scottish Virgin West Coast service runs near the Grand Union Canal in rural Northamptonshire. Whilst the bucolic scene appears quiet looks can be deceiving with the M1 motorway just a few hundred metres behind where I am standing. Class 390, VT 07.35 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly, Whilton Locks SP619640 A 'glint shot' of and unidentified Class 390 as it approaches Whilton in Northamptonshire working the 07.35 Euston to Manchester service. Whilst I like the reflections in the still waters of the Grand Union Canal it's a shame that this does not extend to the train itself. 86259, outward leg of The Cumbrian Mountain Express 2, 07.06 London Euston-Carlisle (1Z86), Whilton Locks SP619640 Making for a fine site in the early morning sunshine 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' leads The Cumbrian Mountain Express 2 charter running as 1Z86 approaching the Northamptonshire village of Whilton. Unfortunately, there were no narrow boats on this section of the Grand Union Canal as the train passed, something that would have set the photograph off nicely! 86259, outward leg of The Cumbrian Mountain Express 2, 07.06 London Euston-Carlisle (1Z86), Whilton Locks SP619640 A side-on view of the outward leg of The Cumbrian Mountain Express passing along the top of a lofty embankment between Weedon and Whilton in Northamptonshire led by veteran AL6 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan'. I chose this interesting view in part due to the third-quarter phased moon above the locomotive. Leaving London Euston at 07.06 and running as 1Z86 it arrived on-time into Preston and 10.16 where 60009 'Union of South Africa' took over for the rest of the outward leg to Carlisle with a legendary accent of Shap. 350109, LM 09.13 London Euston-Birmingham New Street, Northampton station car park London Midland's 09.13 Euston to Birmingham New Street arrives at Northampton taken from the station's car park. It is worked by 350109 and another unidentified unit at the rear. The line curving off to the left used to lead to Bridge Street station and onwards along the Nene Valley towards Wellingborough and Peterborough. It also led to the Northampton steam shed (4B) and onward to the WCML which it joined at Blisworth as an alternative to the present-day route that prevailed during the 1960s rationalisation. The photograph is taken from Northampton's station car park in bright winter sunshine. This was one of these superb and crisp winter days that offer the photographer superb crisp lighting. With the demolition of the old station and the construction of the new one about to start, I wonder if access to this useful spot will still be possible in the future.
