A sunny but slightly misty Saturday morning with two northbound charters within a few minutes of each other was too good to miss! I took a walk from home to the site of Roade's former station to photograph the trains. However, being yet another strike day, there were no other services but for some freight, all being diverted via the fast lines.

90005 & 90042, 04.57 Trafford Park-Ipswich SS (4L97, 20L), site of Roade station
Just catching some early morning September sunshine as it emerges from Roade cutting the 04.57 Trafford Park to Ipswich SS is seen hauled by Freightliner 90005 and 90042. The train is on the up fast line thus avoiding Northampton due to this day being another in a long line of strike days blighting our beleaguered railways; come along unions and employers, talk for goodness sake. The train will run to Ipswich using AC power to then be hauled down to Felixstowe probably by a Class 66. As an aside, can anybody out there please tell me what the SS stands for as in Ipswich SS?

With the 4L97 Freightliner safely out of the way at Roade 86259 'Peter Pan/Les Ross' passes at speed heading north leading the 1Z86 Cumbrian Coast Express. I love the lighting in this photograph with the rising sun just glinting on the side of the train with the September morning mists still hanging about in the distance. On arrival at Carlisle, the train would be steam hauled around the delightful and dramatic Cumbrian Coast route by 45690 'Leander' as far as Carnforth where 86259 would take the train back to Euston.

67007, outward leg of The Snowdonian, 06.51 London Euston-Bangor (1Z67, RT), site of Roade station
Within a few minutes of 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' heading past this spot at Roade another charter does the same this time hauled by 67007. UK Railtours' The Snowdonian, or should it be The Yr Wyddfian, left Euston at 06.51 arriving at Bangor on time with passengers then able to go and enjoy various other attractions arranged by UKR. With it being such a perfectly still morning I could hear the Class 67 for some distance prior to it appearing around the curve to the rear of the frame.

67005 'Queen's Messenger', along with 67007 (out of sight and leading) has become the regular 'go-to' 67s used on charter traffic. Bringing up the rear of The Snowdonian charter that left Euaton at 06.51 and, appropriately, running as 1Z67 67005 is seen passing through Roade in the early morning September light. Notice my shadow on the extreme left of the frame as I lean over the parapet of the bridge on my steps to capture the scene!
