For my birthday earlier in the month, my wife bought me a steam footplate experience from our local heritage line the Northamptonshire and Lamport Railway (NLR). A good time was had on the footplate of its resident Peckett 0-4-0st number 2104 (although it carries the number 4 since its recent overhaul) as it hauled a return service on the line. Later in the afternoon, I took a walk from home to capture the passage of the 5Z68 empty coaching stock move.

View from cab of No. 4, 12.00 Pitsford return
The view from the cab of 0-4-0 Peckett number 4 (2104) as it leaves Pitsford and Brampton station with the 12.00 return working. Taking a framed photograph such as this (or any others for that matter) was quite a challenge as the ride on the footplate of the locomotive could well be described as lively!

Footplate, No. 4, 12.00 Pitsford return
The footplate of number 4 (2104) was fairly compact, to say the least! It would have been tight with just the fireman and driver but the addition of me and my camera made it a little uncomfortable. The controls of the Peckett are extremely simple but will be familiar to any train driver.

Coaling the fire, No. 4, 12.00 Pitsford return
On a warm and late springtime day the footplate of a small steam locomotive is a hot place to be! The fireman of Peckett 0-4- No. 4 (2104) shovels another load of coal into the firebox as it hauls the 12.00 Pitsford return service. This photograph also gives a bit of an idea as to how compact the footplate is what with the driver (to my right), the fireman and me all competing for our little bit of space.

The view from the cab of Peckett 0-4-0 N0. 4 (2104) as it gets away from its limit of operation on the Northampton and Lamport Railway hauling the 12.00 Pitsford return service. The small signal box in the centre of the frame is named Pitsford Sidings and was previously located inside Wolverton Works.

Me on the footplate, No. 4, 12.00 Pitsford return
Yours truly stands proudly n the footplate of Peckett 0-4-0 No. 4 (2104) after arrival back in Pitsford and Brampton station. The compact design of the Peckett, particularly in relation to its loading gauge is clear to see in this image with the relative height of the locomotive compared to the 4-Wheel CCT van to which it is attached.

Me on, No. 4, 12.00 Pitsford return
The Northampton and Lamport Railway's Peckett now numbered 4 (previously 2104) is seen at Pitsford station with yours truly standing on the buffer beam. I had an interesting run on the footplate of the Peckett with the driver and fireman even if it was a little cramped!

Driver & fireman, No. 4, 12.00 Pitsford return
The driver (L) and fireman (R) of the Peckett 0-4-0 No. 4 stand next to their locomotive after arriving with the 12.00 Patsford return working. After riding on the footplate with them and chatting about their voluntary work on the NLR it was reassuring to hear of their dedication and love of their work. It was also encouraging that they are both relatively young with this being encouraging for the future of heritage lines such as the Northampton and Lamport line.

Footplate, No. 4, 12.00 Pitsford return
A final look at the footplate of Peckett No.4 (formally 2104) at Pitsford and Brampton station. The footplate experience was enjoyable with the main thing that I'll take from it was the young and enthusiastic driver and fireman that gives real hope for the heritage scene; well done and thanks to them!

M94071, stabled, Pitsford Yard
Built at York (underframe) and St. Rollox (body and assembly) in 1958 GUV (General Utility Van) was a Midland-allocated vehicle. However, the nature of these GUVs meant that they were found and ended up all over the country. At some time in its life, it became a newspaper van and had ceiling-mounted heating added. Ending its career allocated to Bristol Marsh Junction it was withdrawn in 1995 seeing just under forty years in service. It is a long-term resident of the Northampton and Lamport Railway having arrived the year after its withdrawal in 1996 and is used for general storage.

On a perfect spring afternoon, 66765 'Julie Garn' leads the 14.20 Wembley Reception to Burton-ot-Wetmore empty coaching stock move. The previous day the stock and locomotives had been used to operate The Parkeston Panorama charter from London to Norwich via a roundabout route including, as the name suggests, a return run down the Harwich branch via Parkstone Quay. This Class 66 was named last year (2022) in a short ceremony at Great Yarmouth in recognition of another member of the GBRf team, in this case, their international business leader. With AWC's 390020 approaching fast the scene is taken at Victoria bridge just south of Roade.

Having been involved in the previous day's Parkeston Panorama charter 66748 'West Burton 50' brings up the rear of the 5Z68 14.20 Wembley Yard to Burton-ot-Wetmore empty stock move. 66765 'Julie Garn' leads the train that is seen passing Victoria bridge just south of Rade in Northamptonshire. 390020 working Avanti's 14.52 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly is seen overhauling the empty stock.

This is my first photograph of the one-off liveried DB 66004. It wears its green vinyls and statement 'I am a climate hero' but is it actually an official name? The Class 66 is part of an experiment to use various alternative fuels rather than diesel in an effort to reduce emissions with particular attention paid to CO2, see.... https://www.modernrailways.com/article/dbc-trials-eco-fuel-class-66 66004 is leading the daily 6M45 11.07 Dollands Moor to DIRFT bottled water train past Victoria bridge between Roade and Ashton. London Northwestern's 350241 is seen approaching on the down fast working the 14.45 Euston to Crewe service.

Footplate pass ticket
My footplate pass ticket as issued by the Northampton and Lamport Railway. Bought as a birthday present from my wife it is pretty good value when compared to the astronomical prices for such things charged by other heritage lines!
