Whilst my wife rested I took a quick tube trip on the Piccadilly Line from Holborn station to see what was about at King’s Cross.

A familiar part of the scenery at King’s Cross for a number of years now the Class 180s are getting a little long in the tooth now. Grand Central and East Midlands Trains (but they are soon to hand them back to their owner) are the sole operators of these Hydraulic five-car DMUs. GC’s 16.48 1N94 service to Sunderland waits to leave King’s Cross being worked by 180102.

A broadside view of 91110 ‘Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’ as it stands at King's Cross' platform zero. Introduced into service in April 1988 as 91001 this member of the class has worn this striking livery since 2012 and is likely to do so while it remains in service. However, as the first member of the class, it is likely to enter preservation so what livery it will wear then is up for debate.

The new lineup at King’s Cross is fully established as is seen in this typical scene. From left to right the line up is….

- 801102, 12.00 ex Edinburgh Waverley (1E14)
- 800106, 17.18 to Hull (1H10)
- 80XXXX, 17.00 to Edinburgh Waverley (1S26)
- 800109, 16.55 to Bounds Green ECS (5Y34

To the left in this photograph, 801122 is being prepared for its next journey north after arriving a little earlier with the 1E14 12.00 ex Edinburgh Waverley. Meanwhile, 800108 is in the last few yards of its five hundred and twenty-three-mile journey from Aberdeen from where it left at 09.52 running as 1E15

Commemorative plaque, 91110, GR 17.03 London King's Cross-Leeds (1D23, 14L), London King's Cross station
91110 has become a deserved celebrity member of the once thirty-one-strong fleet of locomotives that became synonymous with the ECML hauling its express trains since entering service in 1988. As well as carrying this plaque commemorating its speed record it is also livered and branded as Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. I suspect that as one of the handfuls of IC225s that remain in service when the curtain comes down that this one will enter preservation.

Still looking superb in its one-off livery, 91110 ‘Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’ waits at King’s Cross platform zero to leave with the 17.03 service to Leeds. I do not know how long the Class 91s will remain in service on the ECML but having been in operation for twenty-five years they have outlived the Deltics by a decade now.

A pair of Great Northern services stand side by side at King’s Cross ready to leave within a few minutes of each other. To the left 387111 is about to close its doors and depart with the 1T48 17.07 service to Ely. Whilst to the right, 387306 will leave a few minutes later with the 1P84 train to Peterborough.
