19. A busy Sunday afternoon on the southern WCML-26.03.23

Whilst eating a leisurely Sunday breakfast I took my usual look at RTT to see what was about later in the day. I discovered three interesting workings within about forty-five minutes of each other so I timed my Sunday walk to coincide with their passages hoping that they would all actually run!

37611, 13.30 Derby RTC-Wembley Yard (0H72, 44E), Roade cutting
The first train of the interesting Sunday afternoon trilogy passes southbound through Roade cutting. Europheonix’s 37611 ‘Pegasus’ as the 0H72 13.30 Derby RTC to Wembley Yard travelled south along the MML from Derby to Wigston North Junction where it headed west for a reversal at Nuneaton before continuing south via the WCML route through Rugby and Northampton. This working would more commonly take the MML further south to Bedford where it would take the Marston Vale line to Bletchley. I am not sure why it took the more circuitous route today but I am not complaining!

47614, 14.10 Wembley Yard-Crewe HS (5Z65, 56L), Roade cutting
Leaving quite a smoke stream across Roade cutting 47614 leads the 5Z65 14.10 Wembley Yard to Crewe HS empty coaching stock move. The train stock was returning to Crewe following its use on yesterday's Steam Dreams London to Settle & Carlisle Railway charter viewed yesterday at Victoria bridge, see…. https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30040239093/x86101-london-to-settle-carlisle. The train was running to time something that it managed all the way to Basford Hall where something obviously went wrong as the final few miles from there to Crewe station for its reversal into LSL’s base it ended up being nearly an hour late.

86101, 14.10 Wembley Yard-Crewe HS (5Z65, 56L), Roade cutting
Dead in tow on the rear of the 14.10 Wembley Yard to Crewe HS 86101 ‘Sir William Stanier FRS’ is seen as the train passes through Roade cutting. 86101 was one of a pair (the other being 87002) that were sold to LSL back in 2019 by Electric Traction Limited following the ending of their contract to haul the Caledonian Sleeper Mk. III stock in and out of Euston from Wembley Yard. It is good that this decision was made rather than the alternative one of putting them into storage and then for them to possibly never work on the network again!

73964 & 73963, 10.55 Hither Green-Derby RTC (1Z10, 55E), Roade cutting
The third train of the three that I went out to see on this rather cold and dull spring Sunday afternoon passes through Roade cutting. The Network Rail test train had been undertaking survey work on Southern metals with several postings revealing where it had been over the last few days. I suspect that the 10.55 Hither Green to Derby RTC run operated by 73964 ‘Jeanette’ (front) and 73963 ‘Janice’ (rear) was simply returning to its base rather than undertaking survey work as this is usually a weekly run operated by one of NR’s HSTs on a Tuesday. In addition to this, the train gradually gained time throughout its run arriving nearly an hour early at Derby.

73963, 10.55 Hither Green-Derby RTC (1Z10, 55E), Roade cutting
The passage of Electro Diesels (Eds) through Roade cutting, or anywhere on the WCML for that matter, is fairly unusual. 73963 ‘Janice’ is seen at the rear of the 1Z10 10.55 Hither Green to Derby RTC Network Rail test train that was returning to its base on the down fast line passing through Roade cutting. This is my first picture of this converted Class 73 that was formally numbered E6030, 73123 and 73206

66088, 11.33 Dollands Moor-DIRFT (6M45, 4E), Hyde Road bridge
My return walk home happened to coincide with the passing of the daily bottled water train. 66088 leads the 6M45 11.33 Dollands Moor to Daventry through Roade passing Hyde Road bridge. The former EWS Class 66 has only been photographed once before, see…. https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/24848715004/x66088-17-36-southampton-eastern and looks as though it is one that has recently been repainted and branded into its DB colours.
