After a late start and a nice breakfast, we made for home retracing our steps from yesterday. First a Southeastern Javelin from Stratford International to St. Pancras, second, a walk to Euston and thirdly a London Northwestern Desiro from there back to Northampton.

Class 395, 10.55 Margate-London St. Pancras (1J29, 4L), Stratford International station
Our train back to St. Pancras arrives at Stratford International. My wife and I travelled on this unidentified Class 395 Javelin for about ten minutes as it whisked us primarily through tunnels to St. Pancras working the 10.55 from Margate. I have to say that Stratford International station was a pretty soulless, semi-subterranean, dark and austere place constructed, it seemed, out of large chunks of white concrete. However, it was built as part of the development of the wider Stratford area in preparations for London 2012 so I suppose that it will have served its initial purpose back then.

Chimneys, London St. Pancras station
As I was exiting St. Pancras International's Southeastern platform I glanced to left and spotted some chimney pots that seemed familiar. Indeed, these same chimneys are featured in a photograph that I took back in 1981. With the profound redevelopment of this area over the years it is remarkable that they still survive, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30022860842/enamel-london-st-pancras-station

59204, stabled, Wembley Yard
59204 is seen stabled in Wembley Yard as we pass at speed on a Desiro heading north. I suspect that the Class 59 interloper would be leading an afternoon empty stone working back to the West Country, probably to Merehead Quarry

66601, 13.20 Willesden-Tunstead (6H50, 6E), Wembley Yard
66601 'The Hope Valley' is returning to its namesake leading the 6H50 13.20 Willesden to Tunstead empty stone wagons. The train is seen waiting to leave Wembley Yard about an hour after this photograph was taken. Notice the leading cab of the Freightliner Class 66 completely festooned in limestone dust probably from its last visit to the quarries

350402, LN 12.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1W13, RT), Northampton station
Having arrived back in Northampton I turned my camera around to capture the rear of our train as it rests for some ten minutes prior to departing for Birmingham New Street. My wife and I travelled on the 12.49 from Euston finding it extremely busy, to begin with at least, however many passengers alighted at Watford Junction where we stopped on the down fast platform. The train manager also made a clear announcement just prior to this stop that Oyster validity finished at Watford. Notice that we had the luxury of travelling in one of the small subset of ex TPE 350/4s. These offer a much more pleasant ambience and roomy travelling experience than the rather tired and battle worn 350/1,2 and 3s.

Tickets, London Euston-Northampton
The second pair of our return tickets from Euston to Northampton. With our two-together discount, the out and back journey cost us a reasonable £13.50 each way. However, this did not cover the cost of the leg from St. Pancras to Stratford International and back that was covered by tapping in and out contactless.
