390134, VT 11.20 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H21, 2E), London Euston station
Our train back from London to Milton Keynes waits at Euston station. My wife and I travelled on 390134 'City of Lancaster' working the 1H21 11.20 service to Manchester. Taking just a shade under thirty minutes meant that my wife could not even take a nap something that she complained about but she also complains that the more usual London Northwestern services take too long; I will say no more!

66194, stabled, Wembley Yard
Following the last few days characterised by hot and sunny weather the day of our journey home was cloudy and a lot cooler. On passing Wembley Yard 66194 is seen stabled between duties with bot cab doors wide open. With no air conditioning crews complain regularly about conditions inside the driving compartment of the Class 66s with hot weather making them unpleasant places to work.

66572, stabled, Wembley Yard
Freightliner's 66572 stands stabled in Wembley Yard awaiting its next turn of duty. Amongst the tower blocks of north London in the background Wembley stadium is also in view.

66562, 05.34 DIRFT-Tilbury (4Z61), Wembley Yard
With its three-hour layover at Wembley overrunning considerably the 05.34 Daventry to Tilbury Freightliner service is seen with 66562 at the head. This regular weekday flow has the curious reporting number of 4Z61. Whilst the 4 is correct (fast freight) Z usually refers to an STP (short term planned) service being more usually associated with charters. As this flow is now regular I wonder if it will revert to a more normal route identifier letter?

66040, 06.53 Dollands Moor-DIRFT (6M45, RT), Wembley Yard
At the northern end of Wembley Yard the seven-day-a-week 'water train' is seen waiting to leave and head northwards on the final leg of its journey from central Europe. 66040 is working the 6M45 06.53 Dollands Moor to Daventry that once it arrives at the Northamptonshire hub will return later in the afternoon with the empty Cargowaggons from yesterday's train.

59205, stabled, Wembley Yard
In the same way that Westerns could often be seen in north London having worked away from their more normal haunts, Class 59s do the same sort of thing. Having worked up overnight as the middle locomotive in the jumbo stone train from Merehead 59205 is seen waiting in Wembley Yard. Within the hour it will work back to the Somerset quarry with the empties as the 7C77 12.19 ex Wembley. Running as a Class 7, even when empty, creates issues for signallers throughout its journey with the train running at a maximum of forty-five miles per hour. The double-track Berks. and Hants. route between Reading and Westbury creates particular issues for such a train with it having to be looped in order to keep GWR trains running to time.

Tickets, London Euston-Milton Keynes Central
Our return tickets from Euston to Milton Keynes. There are still excellent value super off-peak tickets available (made even cheaper with railcard discounts) if one can be flexible about times of travel. It's such a shame that things are not made clear to the travelling public who are often missing out on these cheaper tickets due to a general ignorance of the crazy system that we have on the railways. With every ticket review, this situation, it is claimed, will be addressed but as yet nothing has changed; what a scandal.
