Our journey home was pretty uneventful but for some extremely busy trains heading to Chester carry racegoers to the Edinburgh Gin Summer Saturday at the city's racecourse. The station itself was absolutely rammed with rather overdressed individuals heading to the course complete with a fair amount of noise and high spirits!

150106, stabled, Chester station
Northern's 150106 stands stabled at Chester station awaiting its next turn. The last time that I saw and photographed 150106 was back in the summer of 2017 at a very different location to here in the northwest, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/24717818804/x57602-08-22-penzance-penzance-mpd Perhaps, with new units about to be introduced that will replace these ageing trains this will be the last time that I will photograph it?

153329, AW 11.54 Chester-Crewe (1K09, 1E), Crewe station
Today is a classic example of where the railways have failed to take account of events and compensate accordingly. By doing this they have caused inconvenience to the travelling public giving them justifiable cause to complain and moan about poor railway service. With a major meet at Chester racecourse, the shuttle between there and Crewe did not appear to have been bolstered to support the extra thousands of people using public transport. We travelled on the 11.54 Chester to Crewe formed by 153329 and one other single unit that itself was very busy. The incoming trains were absolutely packed with racegoers none of which appeared to have been bolstered to make things more comfortable. In BR days extra and longer trains would have been put on to provide an adequate 'service' that is what the railways are all about after all!

390129, VT 11.47 Liverpool Lime Street-London Euston (1A32, RT), Crewe station
390129 pauses at Crewe station having just arrived with the 11.47 Liverpool to Euston ATW service. I have to pinch myself when I remember that these units have been in operation on the WCML for twenty years now with the first service running on 23.07.02. They are currently undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment programme ensuring that they will remain fit for service for a number of years to come but it does not stop me from thinking about when the first ones may be withdrawn from service!

350263 & 350261, LN 12.33 Crewe-London Euston (1U30, 8L), Crewe station
By contrast to the two-car train that we had just taken from Chester to Crewe that was absolutely packed the eight-car Class 350 was virtually empty! In fact, it stayed pretty empty for the duration of the journey that we took on it from Crewe to Milton Keynes. 350263 is seen on the stops with 350261 leading at the front as the crew walk down ready to work the 1U30 12.33 to Euston service.

Tickets, Chester-Milton Keynes Central
Our return tickets from Chester were a lot cheaper than our outward tickets, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30028203652/tickets-milton-keynes-central-chester ! The return journey with everything running to time worked out at ten pence per mile whereas the outward was nearly double at nineteen pence per mile!
