The return lunchtime journey back from Euston was a straightforward affair on a quiet off-peak train.

Totems, The Signal Box bar, London Euston station
I have never really passed The Signal Box bar on the far southeast side of Euston station but as we had to visit the large M&S food store next to it I noticed the collection of totems in the entrance foyer. Initially, I thought they may be copies but closer examination revealed patina in the form of chipped enamel and rusting in places. In addition, some were flanged.

The second wall of the entrance to The Signal Box bar at Euston station with a further five totems on display. As they are genuine items and not copies I hope that they are securely attached to the wall as their combined value will be over ten thousand pounds! When the bar closes in the next year or so as a result of the HS2 development of the station I am sure that they will be saved and then remounted on a new bar close by!

350258, LN 13.24 London Euston-Northampton (2N67, 1E), London Euston station
Our train home from Euston stands in the gloom of the station that will soon (in the next few years or so) be consigned to Brutalist history! 350258 leads another Desiro that will work the 13.24 Euston to Northampton 2N67 service that was relatively empty, long gone are the packed afternoon trains out of Euston with punters rushing down the platform to grab a seat!

390118, VT 13.30 London Euston-Glasgow Central (1S69, 102L) & 390136, VT 14.30 London Euston-Glasgow Central (Cancelled from Carlisle) (1S72, 14L), London Euston station
Two Anglo Scottish Avanti Pendolinos stand at London Euston in the afternoon spring sunshine. In the background 390136 will work the 14.30 departure whilst in the foreground 390118 will leave soon at 13.30. Unfortunately, for both these trains, things went horribly wrong later in their journeys due to overhead supply problems in the Borders. The 13.30 service made it to Glasgow with an eye-watering one hundred and two minutes of delay whilst the 14.30 service was cancelled at Carlisle. I presume passengers heading beyond Carlisle were transferred to services taking the G&SW route via Dumfries

390118, VT 13.30 London Euston-Glasgow Central (1S69, 102L), London Euston station
In a style reminiscent of many photographs that I took back in my train spotting youth 390118 stands at Euston station. With the driver of the 1S69 13.30 Euston to Glasgow Central sitting on the bench to the extreme right enjoying some spring sunshine, his steed strikes quite a pose!

The 13.00 Euston to Watford Junction service leaves its starting point worked by 710376. These London Overground units strike quite a pose in their distinctive white, blue and orange livery.

59202, 15.45 Wembley Reception-Merehead (7C64, 106L ), Wembley Yard
Having drawn the train in from Chelmsford 59202 stands down in Wembley Yard. After a layover, it would run round the empty JNA stone hoppers and head off west as the 15.45 7C64 to Merehead via the GWML and the Berks. and Hants. route through Westbury.

66528, 12.24 Wembley Reception-Merehead (6C77, 222L) & 66168, 11.26 London Victoria-Wembley reception (0Z66, 30L), Wembley Yard
In a study of different liveries, 66528 stands next to 66169 at Wembley Yard's Sudbury Junction. The EWS liveried version spent most of the day stabled at this spot having hauled the Pullman stock into Victoria earlier in the morning that was to work the Belmond British Pullman to Gillingham. Later in the day, it would return to remove the empty stock to Stewart's Lane. Meanwhile, the Freightliner locomotive would work the 6C77 12.24 to Merehead service that should already have left when we passed it, it did soon after this photograph was taken arriving at its destination an hour adrift.

66415, 12.24 Wembley Reception-Merehead (6C77, 222L), Wembley Yard
I would have thought that the tucking in of a Class 66 in the middle of two sets of fright wagons may well have been a one-off event as seen here. However, I later read in Rail magazine that this is becoming more common practice in what is probably a cost-saving exercise to return two empty stone trains back to Morehead quarry in one. 66415 'You Are Never Alone' is seen sandwiched in the middle of what would be the 6C77 12.24 Wembley Yard to Merehead with 66528 leading up at the front.

Tickets, London Euston-Northampton
Our advanced off-peak return tickets from Euston to Northampton were the same price as the outward ones at £6.60 each. This meant that the total journey cost there and back was £26.40, not bad value at 20 pence/mile I suppose?
