Leg 8, Leicester-Nuneaton (19mi)

The final leg of our interesting East Midlands Day Ranger found an exact reversal of our first journey of the morning from Leicester to Nuneaton. If Crosscountry had done better a little earlier in the day we would have returned via the Trent Valley route from Tamworth but the best of plans and all that!

222013, EM 17.01 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C77, RT), Leicester station
EMR's 222013 arrives at Leicester working the 17.01 Sheffield to St. Pancras 'fast' service. It is designated as a fast service because on leaving Leicester the 1C77 runs non-stop to London. Whilst for customers north of Leicester this works well it has meant that those further south from places such as Wellingborough gets a poor service pattern with hardly any quick trains to London.

222007, EM 17.02 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F60, RT) & 222101, EM 17.50 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B79, 3E), Leicester station
A study of two Meridians as they pause at Leicester station. Furthest away is former Hull Trains' unit 222101, once named 'Professor George Gray', wearing a fairing that appears to have been a spare part from an EMT unit. This Meridian is working the 1B79 17.50 Nottingham to St. Pancras service. Nearest the camera is the rear end of 222007 'City of Derby' working the 1F60 17.02 St. Pancras to Sheffield train.

170619, XC 18.18 Leicester-Birmingham New Street (1P26, 4L), Nuneaton station
Having completed the final leg of our East Midlands Day Ranger in the almost darkness at Nuneaton I turned my camera towards the train and using its night photography settings I captured 170619 waiting to depart with the 18.18 Leicester to Birmingham New Street service. Due to some sort of engineering works between Syston and Peterborough many CrossCountry services on this route were terminating and starting from Leicester (such as this one) with a long and no doubt unpleasant bus journey for passengers east of there. I have to say that this was not well advertised and had quite an effect on our plans earlier in the day.

170620, XC 18.22 Birmingham New Street-Stansted Airport (1L52, RT), Nuneaton station
With Andy walking the length of 170620 assiduously collecting the carriage numbers of the 18.22 Birmingham New Street to Stansted Airport pauses at Nuneaton station. This one of CrossCountry's services on this route that was actually running right through rather than terminating at Leicester for passengers to then board a bus in order to reach Peterborough; are they actually running a railway company I ask myself?

172002, LN 19.16 Nuneaton-Leamington Spa (2G92, 21L), Nuneaton station
172002 looks smart in its West Midlands Railway livery as it stands at Nuneaton station waiting to work the 19.16 service to Leamington Spa. These services used to just shuttle between Nuneaton and Coventry but with the opening of Kenilworth station, they have been extended through to Leamington. Whilst this service left on time something went wrong later in its journey with it being delayed by a CrossCountry service on the still single section of track between Kenilworth and Leamington that really does need to be re-doubled as it is a bottleneck for services causing multiple delays at times.

Day Ranger tickets
Andy and my East Midlands Day Ranger tickets cost us £27.70 each with our two together discounts loaded. We got pretty good value out of them with an average of just over eleven pence per mile for our two hundred and forty-mile extravaganza around the East Midlands! However, last summer's West Midlands Day Ranger worked out to be better value at just over seven pence per mile.
