This was not part of the plan that Andy and I had to get back to Nuneaton. If it had not been for a late-running train we would have got to Tamworth for a quick dash down the Trent Valley route. Instead, we had to partially retrace our steps from earlier in the morning going back via Leicester.

66187, 12.00 Appleford Sidings-Milford West (6E11, 5E), Derby station
The 6E11 12.00 Appleford sidings (just south of Oxford) to Milford West is led through Derby station by 66187. This is a total 'grab shot' but one that shows the barren concrete openess of the new Derby station.

Derby station
Think about this.......it's just before 17.00 on a Wednesday afternoon and this is the scene at Derby station; where is everybody? Close examination of the photograph reveals just two people with it appearing more like a 'where's Whally' scene than a busy interchange station! This is what two years of COVID has done to the railways and I have to ask if things will return to pre-pandemic conditions? My feeling is that the railways will have to recognise this and realise that the peak is now the leisure market rather than to commuter. However, the railways are notoriously slow at changing their mindset with the undertaking of engineering work at weekends and public holidays being a great example of something that can now and needs to change.

222006, EM 16.37 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C74, 1L), Derby station
The penultimate train of our East Midlands odyssey arrives at Derby station in the form of the 16.37 Sheffield to St. Pancras service. Andy and travelled aboard 222006 to Leicester largely repeating our outbound journey from the morning from Trent Junction at least.

47847 & 47843, stabled, UKRL depot
In its British Railways and BR days, 47787 was shedded at various depots in the east and the north never being a locomotive that I spotted back in the 70s and 80s. In 1989 it was fitted with long-range fuel tanks and joined the dedicated InterCity pool. After some time with the now-defunct Riviera Trains, it joined GBR and has now ended up at UKRL's depot at Leicester awaiting some time and attention!

37800, 47843, 56104 & 56312, stabled, UKRL depot
An eclectic mix of BR era diesels stands at UKRL's Leicester depot which is the site of the former diesel depot that fell into somewhat sporadic use from 1987 becoming very overgrown and run down. It has now been reborn and looks functional and organised as UKRL's centre of activity. In this scene taken from our passing train 37800 is seen to the extreme left with Railfreight grey liveried 56104 taking centre stage and 47843 squeezed in between the two. To the extreme right is 56312 which still wears its Devon & Cornwall Railway livery. I last photographed this particular Grid back in May 2014 at one of the NVR's popular diesel galas but since then it has lost its nameplates, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30013191661/x56312-15-30-peterborough-nv-wansford
