Andy and I used our Two Together discount to reduce the cost of the Day Ranger tickets thus limiting the start time validity to 09.30 rather than 09.00 for the non-discounted ticket. In order to get away before that time, we purchased a couple of off-peak returns (actually cheaper than a pair of singles!) from Nuneaton to Hinkley thus giving us a post 09.30 start time. We travelled from Nuneaton to Leicester aboard a lightly loaded CrossCountry Class 170.

1. 170109, XC 08.52 Birmingham New Street-Leicester (1K07, 1L), Nuneaton station
Our first train of the day but not one that we were travelling on using the Day Ranger validity as it departed from Nuneaton before 09.30 arrives at our starting point. We travelled on 170109 working the 08.52 Birmingham to Leicester as far as its destination with Day Ranger validity commencing from Hinkley. Unfortunately, the first problem that we encountered was on this train wondering why it was not working through to Peterborough and beyond discovering that services on that route were much reduced due to engineering works with the dreaded bsutitution. This meant that our initial plan to go straight to Peterborough then dash along the ECML to Grantham had to be abandoned!

Tickets, Nuneaton-Hinkley
To enable an 09.30 validity on our day ranger tickets (as we had used our Two Together discount) we purchased a couple of off-peak returns from Nuneaton to Hinkley. At a cost of £6.50 each this was actually cheaper than the single fare; what a ridiculous situation! This worked out to be a very expensive journey at 81p per mile or, as we only used the ticket one way an eye-watering £1.63 per mile!
