5. Walk to Sheringham-20.10.21

As my wife was suffering from a poorly knee this year I undertook the walk to Sheringham on my own with her meeting me there having driven the car. After some torrential rain in the morning, that I got caught in, the day cheered up with some pleasant autumn sunshine.

92203, 10.00 Sheringham-Holt, Kelling bank With the rain coming down heavily and with me about to get an absolute soaking 92203 'Black Prince' storms up Kelling bank with the 10.00 Sheringham to Holt service. The 2-10-0 9F is a fairly long term resident of the North Norfolk Railway having arrived in 2011 and then bought by the railway in 2015 from its previous owner the well-known artists and railway enthusiast the late David Shepherd Keywords: 92203 10.00 Sheringham-Holt Kelling bank Black Prince 9F
92203, 11.30 Sheringham-Holt, Weybourne Woods TG127422 Less than a minute prior to this photograph being taken the fields were bathed in sunshine and less than a minute later they were again in full light! 92203 'Black Prince' leads the 11.30 Sheringham to Holt North Norfolk Railway service past Weybourne Woods with the North Sea in the background. 755326, GA 13.45 Sheringham-Norwich (2S17, RT), Sheringham station The 13.45 Sheringham to Norwich 2S17 service waits to depart from its starting point in some pleasant afternoon sunshine after a morning of some torrential and squally rain! The line in the foreground crosses Sherringham's appropriately named Station Road to link with the North Norfolk Railway's metals. 92203, running round, Sheringham station Whilst waiting for my wife to meet me in Sheringham I enjoyed a short time sitting on a bench in the sun next to the rather grand Sheringham East signal box. Also whilst waiting 92203 'Black Prince' arrived at Sheringham's NNR station and then ran round its stock to work the final steam-operated return service of the day back to Holt. This 1906 M&GNJR box signal box is the original structure that was located very close to where it now is having been dismantled and removed by volunteers on the fledgling railway when BR threatened to demolish it back in the early 1970s. The box was reconstructed with no base on the station's platform two as a non-operational exhibit until it was reunited with a new brick base back in this position in 2013. 92203, going on-shed, Weybourne station In strong sunshine, I always find the photographing of black locomotives such as 9F 2-10-0 92203 'Black Prince' tricky with the bulk of the superstructure being very dark with no detail evident. As my readers know well, I like to expose my photographs with care concentrating on the background and the sky first then working on the subject, often as two completely separate digital layers. With a superb background with rich colouring in the sky, sea and the field to the right there are still details of the locomotive that are too dark even after spending some time 'working' the image in Photoshop. It is seen arriving at Weybourne from Sheringham with just one coach that is perhaps returning for attention following the ending of services for the day? E51188 & E56062, 16.35 Holt-Sheringham, Weybourne station With all but the roof of Weybourne's station now in deep shadow as the sun lowers in the late afternoon sky the final service train of the day pauses at the platform. The signalman chats to the driver of the 16.35 Holt to Sheringham, being worked by E51188 and E56062, prior to its departure. Following its arrival at Sheringham, the unit will return as empty stock to enter Weybourne's yard for overnight servicing.
