1. Trackwork around Roade

THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2014 > 58. Trackwork around Roade & NLR-21.09.14 > 1. Trackwork around Roade
I had a quick ride around Roade to capture some images of the trackwork taking place. There were two trains occupying both the up and down slow lines with many staff in attendance.

66530, switched off, HOBC train, Roade Hill
Unfortunately, taken the wrong side of the sun 66530 is seen at the head (or is it the tail?) of an HOBC (High Output Ballast Cleaning) waiting on the up slow line just south of Rode in Northamptonshire. Living just the other side of the line at this location it was strange seeing a train stationary on the line with its engines off.

DR92444, stabled HOBC train, Ashton Road bridge
A stationary HOBC train sits on the up slow line just south of Roade in full view of my home that affords views of the line across the filed that I am standing in. The bulk of the train was made up of these materials handling train hopper wagons. This example, DR92444 was built by Plasser & Theurer in 2005.

66546, switched off, HOBC train & Class 66, ballast train, site of Roade station
66546 to the left is seen at Roade where the former station used to be located. It is switched off at the head (or tail) of an HOBC (drain) train. To the right unidentified Class 66 is also stationary but with its engine running on the down slow line. It is attached to a rake of IOA open ballast wagons

Trackworker, A508 bridge
A lone trackworker makes his way along the down slow line at Roade taken from the village's A508 road bridge. He is walking towards the deep cutting just around the curve under Hyde Road bridge.

66522, switched off, ballast train, A508 bridge
This is a viewpoint that, to date, that I only have one photograph of due to its awkward position. It is taken from Roade's A508 road bridge on the side where there is no pavement. Usually, unless it was a Sunday morning, the bridge would be rammed with cars, HGVs and busses all vying for space that would make mincemeat of a railway photographer! 66522 is seen at the head of a shortish rake of open ballast wagons that were involved in work in Roade cutting a short distance north of this location.

Floor, former Roade station
The floor of the former booking office of Roade station is still extant some fifty years after it closed. The two parallel lines show where the internal walls were located with their accompanying supports for the door canopy. A contemporary image can be seen at https://www.flickr.com/photos/trevor-plackett/6761678509 which puts my photograph into context. The building was a modern replacement for the original timber structure that was destroyed by fire in the 1950s.

390124, VT 08.05 Wolverhampton-London Euston (1B01), A508 Bridge
390124 sweeps through Roade taken from the A508 road bridge. The Virgin Pendolino is working the 08.05 Wolverhampton to Euston 1B01 service. This is one of the first up 'fast' services on a Sunday morning.
