1. To Stoke & outward leg of The Cheshireman

Provisionally we had purchased a new car from Quicks in Stoke-on-Trent without viewing it going on their 'description' of the vehicle. So, my wife and I set off with my trade plates to collect it but on arrival found out that somebody with extremely poor vision had described the Audi! It was in shocking condition so we returned from whence we came thus travelling the expensive way on two single tickets for what was an off-peak return journey. However, we did manage to see the outward leg of The Cheshireman charter roll into Northampton station just prior to our morning outward departure.

60009, outward leg of The Cheshireman, 07.14 London Euston-Chester (1Z91), Northampton station
Whilst waiting at Northampton station for our train south to Milton Keynes, 60009 'Union of South Africa' arrives with the 1Z91 Chesireman charter. The 1937 built A4 looks a little out of place arriving at Northampton underneath the station's brand new, but yet to open, footbridge.

60009, outward leg of The Cheshireman, 07.14 London Euston-Chester (1Z91), Northampton station
The awful September weather has not dissuaded enthusiasts to get out and photograph 60009 'Union of South Africa' as it arrives at Northampton station leading The Cheshireman charter running as 1Z91 that left Euston at 07.14. It picked up some passengers at Northampton before heading off to Chester with a couple of other stops on the way.

350267, LM 08.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1Y16), Northampton station
With a packed Northampton station, 350267 arrives with the 08.14 Birmingham to Euston service that my wife and I took as far as Milton Keynes. Notice the tail of The Cheshireman charter just leaving from platform two which the crowded masses had just enjoyed the spectacle of 60009 'Union of South Africa' leading.

390121, VT 09.20 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H15), Stoke-on-Trent station
390121 pauses ar Stoke-on-Trent station having arrived with the 09.20 Euston to Manchester 1H15 Virgin service. Looking particularly ugly and unstreamlined with its coupling cover folded up my wife and I had travelled on this train from Milton Keynes.

323321, NT 10.59 Stoke-on-Trent-Manchester Piccadilly (2H17), Stoke-on-Trent station
Waiting in Stoke's north-facing bay platform 323321 will soon work the 10.59 stopper service to Manchester Piccadilly. Notice the crew who will work the train, that will leave in some ten minutes, having a chat by the middle coach of three-car unit.

Class 390, VT 10.15 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A24) & Class 220, XC 06.37 Bournemouth-Manchester Piccadilly (1M26), Stoke-on-Trent station
At the southern end of Stoke-on-Trent station, an unidentified Class 390 Pendolino leaves working the 10.15 Manchester to Euston service whilst a Class 220 Voyager arrives with the 06.37 Bournemouth to Manchester train. This view clearly shows the wide gap between the up and down lines that until relatively recently had a relief 'through' track that was removed in 2009, a retrograde step I wonder?

350103, LM 12.02 Crewe-London Euston (1U30), Stoke-on-Trent station
Having rejected the car that we had been hoping to pick up and drive home my wife and I headed straight back to Stoke station all thanks to Quicks! Our first train back to Northampton arrives at Stoke station leading the 12.02 Crewe to Euston service that we took as far as Rugby via the Trent Valley route.

350103, LM 12.02 Crewe-London Euston (1U30) & 57308, stabled, Rugby station
At Rugby station 350103 departs with the 12.02 Crewe to Euston London Midland service. Meanwhile, DRS owned and operated 57308 sits in the bay platform acting as a Thunderbird ready to recover a broken down Virgin service whenever that rare event should take place.

350120, LM 13.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston, (1Y46), Rugby station
The final short leg of our journey back from Stoke to Northampton found my wife and me boarding the 13.14 Birmingham New Street to Euston service at Rugby. 350120 arrives at the station's platform five with an unidentified unit at the rear.

Tickets (outward singles), Northampton-Stoke-on-Trent via Milton Keynes
Fully expecting to drive our new Audi home from Stoke my wife and bought a couple of advanced singles from Northampton that, interestingly routed us via Milton Keynes. The fare (without our two together discount as our card had just expired) was an as to be expected £11.20.

Tickets (return singles), Stoke-on-Trent-Northampton via Rugby
Having taken a taxi back to Stoke station from Quicks on Newcastle Road due to their inability to accurately describe a car that they had for sale my wife and I had to purchase a pair of single tickets home to Northampton that were effectively walk-on fares. Luckily due to the time of travel they were super off peaks so were marginally more than the outward singles in the morning at £13.55 each. Needless to say, Quicks were unhelpful when it came to reimbursing our costs!
