1. The 1Z91 'Love Train'

In an effort to pair up 'singletons' East Coast operated this one-off 'Love Train'. They ran it using an IC225 spare set as 1Z91 from King's Cross to York and back. It was run complete with live music on-board and plenty to eat and drink to break the proverbial ice! I wonder how many of the singles on board arrived back paired up?

365533 'Max Appeal' stands inside King's Cross' magnificent train shed more akin to a cathedral than a railway station! The Great Northern Networker will work the 1T12 09.44 service to King's Lyn.

180109, HT 09.48 London King's Cross-Hull (1H01), London King's Cross station
One of the fourteen un-loved Adelante Class 180s stands on the blocks at King's Cross. 180109 wears its First Group livery and will soon work the 09.48 service to Hull for Hull Trains. I hope that the customer with the bike waiting patiently on the platform has booked a space for his bike as space is extremely limited on modern trains for cycle storage; a shocking situation that needs to be addressed.

43296, GR 06.50 Hull-London King's Cross, London King's Cross station
East Coast's 43296 arrives at King's Cross leading the 06.50 Hull toKing's Cross service. Whilst the majority of services between Hull and London are operated by Hull Trains East Coast are permitted to run one up (this one) and one down service per day under their contractual arrangements with the DfT.

43315, GR 06.55 Skipton-London King's Cross (1A13), London KIng's Cross station
43315 leads the 06.55 Skipton to King's Cross East Coast service out of Gasworks tunnel into the light approaching its destination. The large utilitarian structure to the right is King's Cross PSB that is due to close sometime in the not too distant future as Network Rail continues to roll out its grand plan to have just a handful of regional signalling centres controlling the entire network.

Band playing, welcoming singles aboard the 1Z91 'Love Train', London King's Cross station
A Mexican trio plays on the platform at King's Cross station filling the grand train shed with a slightly bizarre echoed sound! They were there to welcome singles aboard the 1Z91 'Love Train' with staff busying themselves in preparation for the arrival of customers hopeful of finding love aboard! The train left King's Cross at 10.14 for a return trip to York giving passengers plenty of time to meet that 'special friend!

To the left HST power car, 43312 will soon depart with the 10.14 5Y10 empty stock working to Bounds Green having recently arrived from Newcastle. A few minutes prior to its departure 91106 will leave with the 1Z91 10.06 to York. This special working was organised by East Coast in association with a well-known dating agency and was only open to those looking for love; couples were strictly off-limits on this train! I am not sure how many successes resulted from the running of this train but at least those on board enjoyed a nice day out to York and back!

Back in the 1970s this part of King's Cross station was a very depressing, dowdy and run-down place to be! Now it has been completely redeveloped along with much track rationalisation. To the left 313052 has just arrived with the 09.14 from Hertford whilst 313032 is just about to depart with the 09.56 service to Hertford North. Just visible in the background is the grand trainshed of St. Pancras International that itself was very close to being closed and demolished again back in the 1970s but that's another story!

43315, GR 06.55 Skipton-London King's Cross (1A13) & 180107 GC 06.55 Bradford Interchange-London King's Cross, London King's Cross station
The restoration of King's Cross has been an absolute triumph that has totally revitalised the superb station. After years of dirt and grime have been removed the lovely warm London stock brickwork has been revealed in all its glory once again. Viewed through one of the arches that has been so treated 43315 is seen having led the 06.55 from Skipton. The more modern look of Grand Central's 180107 is a marked contrast to the elderly HST. The GC service has also just arrived as the 06.55 from Bradford Interchange.

180107 GC 06.55 Bradford Interchange-London King's Cross, London King's Cross station
Having recently arrived 180107 rests at King's Cross' buffer stops. It has worked the Grand Central 06.55 from Bradford Interchange offering an alternative and direct way of getting to the capital rather than using Northern and East Coast from Leeds. Notice the crude application of the set's number just below the Dellner coupling.

Taken from the footbridge that spans the mainline platforms at King's Cross the magnificently restored station is seen from another angle. An East Coast HST set with 43296 at the rear (43312 is leading at the front about to enter Gasworks tunnel) is leaving working the 10.14 empty coaching stock run to Bounds Green. To the right and also leaving at exactly the same time is the 10,14 to Cambridge being worked by 365523 with a sister unit leading in the older First Group livery.
