Whilst my wife and son spent some time spending money on unnecessary fripperies I went to King's Cross and Liverpool Street to capture to charters. Firstly was the 1Z91 'Love Train' that was running from London to York operated by East Coast. Secondly, was Hastings Diesel's 1Z54 'Essex Coast Express'.

1. The 1Z91 'Love Train'
In an effort to pair up 'singletons' East Coast operated this one-off 'Love Train'. They ran it using an IC225 spare set as 1Z91 from King's Cross to York and back. It was run complete with live music on-board and plenty to eat and drink to break the proverbial ice! I wonder how many of the singles on board arrived back paired up?

2. The Essex Coast Express
Getting on to the platforms at Liverpool Street is always a challenge with extremely strict gateline staff rarely permitting access. Even today on the day that a charter was due in it was frowned upon but I was allowed to join a few others on the platforms but even then under the suspicious gaze of a number of staff who were obviously not happy about our presence! As soon as the charter departed we were ushered back to the concourse. All this overshadowed the event becoming somewhat tiresome and of course I then played it somewhat by stopping to photograph other trains on the walk back along the platform despite being told several times that I was not permitted to do so which is, of course, completely untrue!
