On a belting hot Sunday afternoon that was a precursor to a week-long run of superb summer weather, I took a walk across the fields from home to capture the 5Z72 empty coach stock move from Willesden to LSL at Crewe. I was not expecting it to be double-headed and on the fast line - that was a couple of added bonuses!

66739, 22.27 Willesden West London Junction-Bescot Yard (6G50, 3L), Roade Hill High summer in south Northamptonshire! With just one small and lone cloud in an otherwise clear blue sky GBRf's 66739 'Bluebell Railway' passes Roade Hill between Milton Keynes and Northampton. It is leading the 6G50 22.27 Willesden to Bescot engineering train returning from overnight work in the north London area. Whilst it's nice to be out and about in such weather this image illustrates the perils for the photographer with very deep shadows, almost over-saturation and intense reflection that nearly made identification of the locomotive's number impossible! 47828 & 47614, 12.22 Willesden Yard-Crewe HS ECS (5Z72, 20E), Victoria bridge A train that caught me out on two counts! I had spotted this 5Z92 12.22 Willesden Yard to Crewe (LSL) empty coach stock working on my daily preview of 'trains of interest' passing near to my home but half expected it not to run. However, it soon became clear that it was all 'go-go-go' (with apologies to the late Murray Walker as this was the day of the British GP) so I downed tools at home and set out for a hot walk to Victoria bridge just south of Roade. I was not expecting the train to be double-headed with both 47828 and 47614 under power and had not anticipated the train being put on the fast line at Hanslope Junction. I did feel a little sorry for any fellow enthusiasts who had gone out to see the train on the Northampton loop only to see it on their mobile phones heading away past Weedon!
