After a busy day out and about in Liverpool, my wife took a nap at the hotel so I decided to take an hour or so looking at trains! I took a short return trip from Lime Street to the historic Edge Hill station.

319379, NT 17.09 Liverpool Lime Street-Preston (2N99, 1E), Liverpool Lime Street station
319379 stands in the afternoon sunshine in Liverpool Lime Street's magnificent train shed. The former Thameslink unit will work the 2N99 17.09 service to Preston. I absolutely love photography inside Lime Street station when the sun shines with it producing a very special quality of light.

802217, TP 17.54 Liverpool Lime Street-Newcastle (1P37, 1L), Liverpool Lime Street station
The ever-changing face of Liverpool Lime Street (and the railways in general for that matter) sees Nova 1 802217 waiting on the stops at platform three. Within the hour it will work the 17.54 1P37 TransPennine Express service to Newcastle. I have yet to travel on one of these Nova 1 units but they certainly look the part!

Northern's 319367 stands at Liverpool Lime Street's platform one. I travelled on this, the 17.17 to Manchester Victoria, to just one stop to Edge Hill station, a distance of just less than one and a half miles!

At the eastern end of Edge Hill station London North Western's 350369 with another unit at the rear passes with the 16.04 Birmingham New Street to Liverpool Lime Street service. Meanwhile, 319385 approaches working the 16.56 Wigan North Western to Lime Street Northern service.

319385 comes to a halt at Edge Hill station working the 16.56 'all stations' Wigan to Liverpool Lime Street service. Notice the rusty and tatty-looking electrification masts at Edge Hill station. These appear to date from when the lines were electrified in the mid-1960s judging by their design and general condition.

331011, unidentified ECS working, Edge Hill station
Despite all the technology and information at my disposal, I have failed to identify this, what appears to be judging by its display screen, an ECS working. Northern's Civity 331011 passes slowly through Edge Hill station heading for Liverpool Lime Street.

To the left 175011 passes away through Edge Hill station working ATW's 17.39 Liverpool Lime Street to Wrexham General station. Meanwhile, to the right, Avanti's 390050 slowly approaches working the 15.07 Euston to Liverpool Lime Street service. Notice the mothballed tracks to the extreme right of the photograph. These lines lead down to the Crown Street, Wapping and Stephenson's tunnels that predate the present-day route down to Lime Street.

Frontage, Edge Hill station
The present-day frontage of the historically important Edge Hill station is seen from the cobbled entrance road off Tunnel Road. Edge Hill is Liverpool's oldest working station but this significance is not reflected in its condition with overgrown platforms, a pedestrian tunnel wreaking of urine and some rather run-down buildings far too big for its modern needs. That said, it cannot be denied that the 1836 built station is a grand structure that when it opened contained a stationary steam engine that provided power to haul trains up from Lime Street station by rope.

Plaque, Edge Hill station
The blue plaque inside the ticket office at Edge Hill station proclaiming its historical importance. It reveals that the original western terminus of the Liverpool to Manchester railway at Crown Street was only open for some five years. Crown Street was simply too far from the city centre hence why Lime Street was opened being linked to Edge Hill via the present-day steeply graded mixture of gloomy deep cuttings and tunnels.

331013, NT 17.02 Manchester Victoria-Liverpool Lime Street (2F27, 1E), Edge Hill station
331013 approaches Edge Hill station working the 17.02 Manchester Victoria to Liverpool Lime Street service. Notice the customer information display to the left of the front of the train. These were installed at Edge Hill in January 2021. However, despite this modernisation work, step-free access is not available to two of the station's four platforms.

Former station entrance, Edge Hill station
The second and disused station entrance to Edge Hill station remains firmly closed off at both ends. From the platforms, these large and unsightly gates prevent access to the cobbled and extremely overgrown entrance ramp. At the other end of the entrance on Tunnel Road there is an equally ugly and vandalised brick wall and metal gate. It seems a great shame that such a historically important station such as this is so badly kept - perhaps this will be recognised soon and some effort put into improving this situation?
