Following enjoying a Tom Jones concert at Newmarket Racecourse we spent the following day in Cambridge. Whilst my wife and son did some shopping I was permitted to visit the station.

Frontage, Whittlesford Parkway station
Located just under fifty miles from London (Liverpool Street) Whittlesford station is a delightfully proportioned building that opened in this form in 1890. In this photograph, it contrasts with the ugly modernist design of the Holiday Inn Express building on the other side of the station.

379008, LE 09.28 London Liverpool Street-Cambridge (2H16), Shelford station
378008 passes through Shelford station with the 09.28 Liverpool Street to Cambridge service. The Electrostar units entered service some three years ago on this route and have proved to be a major success improving the travelling experience of passengers between London and Cambridge.

Frontage, Shelford station
Shelford station is built in a classic eastern counties style utilising London stock bricks that many station buildings (and others) used throughout the late Victorian times in this part of the country. The station is now used as an Indian restaurant that, unfortunately, we did not sample. Just an interesting aside, Shelford's one-time station master was a certain Reginald Hall who was the father of the renowned theatre director Sir Peter Hall.

The pair of Abellio Greater Anglia Electrostars are working the 2H25 11.04 Cambridge to Liverpool Street service. The photograph is taken from the security of a swing gate that protects pedestrians at the footpath crossing.

Frontage, Cambridge station
Cambridge station is a finely designed Grade II listed building with its long classical façade and porte-cochère that was, unfortunatly, partially filled in during the twentieth centuary. There is some debate as to the designer of the structure but it is generally agreed that it should be attributed to both Sancton Wood and Francis Thompson.

317339, FC 15.55 Cambridge-London King's Cross (2C53), Cambridge station
317339 is one of the second batches of the BREL (Derby) of these units that were designated 317/2s that entered service in 1986. Now towards the end of their working lives, they are operated by First Capital Connect for the next two months or so before Govia Thameslink takes over their operations as once again our crazy franchising system undergoes one of its totally unnecessary commercial jerks.

365513, FC 14.44 London King's Cross-King's Lyn (1T32), Cambridge station
365513 'Hornsey Depot' leaves Cambridge station working the 14.44 King's Cross to King's Lyn First Capital Connect service. Like the Class 317 units that are also operated by FCC these more modern units dating from the mid-1990s also face an uncertain future as new trains are now on order. It is not at all clear at the moment if they will move to another operator or if the scrap man will be rubbing his hands!

170204, LE 14.20 Ipswich-Cambridge (2W18), Cambridge station
The 14.20 Ipswich to Cambridge Greater Anglia service arrives at its destination having completed its fifty-five-mile journey. I am not at all sure about this rather pale China blue livery applied to GA's assets including this unit 170204. It looks a little dated now but I am sure that this will change as the franchising process relentlessly and unnecessarily rolls over again.

365503, FC 14.55 King's Lyn-London King's Cross (1T01), Cambridge station
With the rather dated and somewhat ugly 1980s styled Tony Carter combined pedestrian and cycle bridge spanning the entire station complex at Cambridge dominating the background 365503 arrives at the station. The First Capital Connect 14.55 King's Lyn to King's Cross service is thirty-eight miles into its one hundred-mile journey at Cambridge. The bridge made the national press last year due to a driver attempting to use it as a short cut, see..... https://www.thesun.co.uk/archives/news/395144/on-yer-bike-driver-takes-wrong-turn-up-cycle-bridge/

379027, LE 14.28 London Liverpool Street-Cambridge (2H36), Cambridge station
379027 and another four-car fellow Electrostar completes its journey at Cambridge having worked the 14.28 from King's Cross. These technologically advanced units have been in operation for some three years now and have a proven reliability record to date. One of the units (379013) is currently being developed to run entirely on battery power in an experimental program between Network Rail and their owner Akiem.

365505, FC 16.15 Cambridge-London King's Cross (1C05), Cambridge station
FCC's 365505 prepares for departure from Cambridge's platform three with the 16.15 service to King's Cross. When air conditioning was added to the units the extra vent was combined into the front ends and they took on this rather comical look that led them to be nicknamed 'Smilers' or 'Happy Trains'! Notice the clouds gathering above the station that was to lead to a torrential rainstorm in the coming few minutes or so.

CrossCountry's 15.27 Stansted Airport to Birmingham New Street service pauses at Cambridge station. The service is being worked by 170519 that is seen on Cambridges four hundred and seventy metre long platform four and one that is divided in the centre at the point where there is a scissor crossover.
