A day trip from York to Harrogate with my wife and son found us travelling on the train. In common with the rest of the week, the weather was miserable with it raining for most of the day!

Two Northern services stand at York station ready to leave within next half an hour or so. To the left, 158855 will work the 08.43 to Hull whilst to the right 158817 the 09.18 to Blackpool North.

43366, XC 06.06 Edinburgh Waverley-Plymouth (1V50), York station
In torrential rain that was, as can be seen here, causing platform staff some issues 43366 stands at the rear of the 06.06 Edinburgh to Plymouth HST service. This CrossCountry power car was introduced from the summer of 1982 when BR introduced HSTs on this route replacing locomotive-hauled services. In this case, 43166 was part of set 253042 that was nominally paired with 43165 which spent their working lives on this route serving passengers ever since.

142091, NT 09.11York-Leeds (2C17), York station
142091 is preparing to leave York station working the 09.11 York to Leeds Northern service. We could have caught this train to Harrogate but my wife and son were not up and ready in time thus leaving me to kill an hour or so at the station whilst waiting for them!

220018, XC 06.30 Birmingham New Street-Newcastle (1E38), York station
With the station and platform lights on due to the dark conditions and the rain absolutely torrential taking a photograph of 220018 meant staying under the canopy. The CrossCountry Voyager is seen pausing at York working the 06.30 Birmingham New Street to Newcastle 1E38 service. Yet another distinctly chilly and very wet day that was particularly disappointing for the last week of May!

91124 pauses at York's platform nine leading the 07.00 King's Cross to Edinburgh Waverley East Coast service. This photograph could well have been taken sometime in December given the dire lighting but it is in fact the last week in May less than a month off the longest day!

A side-on view of HST power car 43300 'Craigentinny' as it stands at York station at the rear of the 06.26 Edinburgh to King's Cross East Coast service. This power car, named in 2009, was unleashed on to the ECML back in October 1978 as part of set 254023 where it has operated ever since; goodness only knows how many miles it has covered in the last thirty-six years?

It looks as though 91106 has been in collision with a hapless bird on its journey north leading the 1N80 07.08 from King's Cross earlier in the morning! It is seen at York station to the rear of its return service next to a Northern Class 158 unit.

66603, up coal train, York station
Coming in from the pouring rain, 66603 leads an up bulk working probably containing coal through York station. Unfortunately, despite all the technology available I was unable to identify this working so if anybody with local knowledge can help out that would be useful! 66603 has led an anonymous life since its arrival in the UK nearly fourteen years ago in November 2000. It has worn its Freightliner livery ever since and has never been named.

My wife, son and I enjoyed a little Pacer action by taking 144011 from York to Harrogate. The 10.11 York to Leeds 2C21 waits to depart under the grand curved roof of York station that was currently protecting us from the teaming rain. The 'nodding donkey' ride characteristics of the Pacers was most noticeable on the sections of ancient jointed track between Skelton Junction and Knaresborough.

150215, NT 15.29 Leeds-York (2C42), Harrogate station
After a wet day spent largely dodging the rain in Harrogate my wife, son and I took the 15.29 Leeds to York Northern service back to York. The train was worked by 150215 that was already busy when it arrived here at Harrogate to be joined by other passengers meaning that t was standing room only for most of our journey.

Class 66, 15.26 Drax PS-Tyne coal terminal, York Yard North
A pretty poor quality photograph taken as our train enters York from the north. It shows an unidentified Class 66 at the head of a northbound bulk train that has taken the York avoided line and is waiting to rejoin the ECML to continue its journey northwards. However, also of interest is the buildings directly above the train. They are the former NER Holgate Road carriage works that were opened in 1884 but has now been closed. Throughout its working life the works has a proud heritage of railway production but this has been blighted somewhat in recent years with many former workers dying from asbestos-related diseases as a result of the conditions within the plant.

D6700 & 55002, stabled, NRM Yard
On entering York station and passing the National Railway Museum two locomotives were on display outside in the rain. In the foreground is 55002 'The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry' with Type 3 D6700 stabled behind it. The Deltic would have passed this spot countless numbers of times during its working life on the ECML up until its withdrawal on 02.01.82.
